Mirena Coil - positive stories?!

Hi ladies!

I had the Mirena Coil fitted two weeks ago, I was quite confident this would be the contraception for me. However the last two weeks I’ve been extremely emotional, crying over anything and everything, aswell as feeling very stressed (could well be being a FTM to a 5 month old and going through a house move!).

I’m looking for some positive mirena stories please?!? I’m praying these emotions will calm down as my body gets used to it?

Also I am still trying to lose my baby weight (I have a stone to go), really hoping the coil doesn’t effect this either Confused. I believed it did not effect your weight, but I have read some forums with women saying they gained.

Any stories would be appreciated xx

I had 3 over a 12ish year period and they were great! I didn't have any noticeable side effects at all. And no periods.

That’s good to know! Hopefully me being so emotional so close to application is just a coincidence Smile

My 5th and final one is being fitted this year. Not a single period in 20 years and no weight gain caused by the coil. Love mine!

I'm on my third and last one, perfect for me, no side effects thankfully but I think everyone is different, could definitely be the baby and the house move, I feel emotional just thinking about that!

I have one and it has been brilliant. First 3 months I was tearful, fractious, and first 6 months had spotting for days on end. However after that all calmed down, so in the context of 5 years I'm glad I stuck with it.

I dithered for years about getting one, read a hundred stories on here of bad side effects. It's such a personal thing, it seems no one can tell what's going to work for them til they try.

I had my first put in last month, my emotions were definitely triggered by it! I've spotted twice since, and TMI but the period 'smell' is horrendously worse, I can wear layers and layers, nothing works at hiding it so I find myself washing multiple times a day - not that it makes much of a difference since it seems to be internal. At first I thought it was an infection but it only happens for a week when I'm spotting :(

I'm on my fourth coil now and it's all been positive. I have it as a treatment for endometriosis and it changed my life from the first month. No periods for the last 16 years. No weight gain - in fact I got fitter ( took up running ) and healthier because I wasn't dealing with the bleeding and pain anymore.

I do get anxiety and tearfulness at certain times of the month but I got that because of the endometriosis anyway. I would say my anxiety is worse than it was but me starting with the coil coincided with me adopting two children so I've no idea if it's the coil or just parenting and general stresses of life that's made me worse.

Saltyflowers · 09/03/2021 17:23

If you had asked me in the first 6 months I’d have said it was the worst thing I’d done but I’m so glad I persevered because I’m now 8 years without a period .

PurBal · 09/03/2021 17:28

It took about 3 months to settle but I loved it otherwise. I also bled for the first few weeks and had a lot of cramp so had to go back and have it's position checked.

minniemoocher · 09/03/2021 17:31

Took about a month to really settle down, had a long bleed around 2 weeks after fitting that lasted 2 weeks, but since it's been a dream

Hey I'm in the same boat as you! I has mine put in when my DD was about 3 months and I haven't had it in for about 6 weeks. I know it's a bit after your baby but it could be your hormones still balancing out and a mixture of new hormones in the coil. I found I was more emotional a couple weeks ago than I am now. I feel better and I forget that I have it! Its scary starting a new conception and I was nervous too at the start. But your body might just need a few weeks to adjust. I hope you start feeling better soon x

ArtfulScreamer · 09/03/2021 18:39

I had one in my 20s for 5 years I don't remember and side effects and I still used to have monthly periods but they were significantly lighter and certainly didn't smell. I'm currently 24 weeks with a much wanted but surprise baby as my DD took 5 years TTC and a round of IVF but once this babies here I'll be having another mirena fitted.

Thank you ladies for telling me your experiences!

Hopefully the emotions will settle and I can enjoy being period free Smile xxx
