Need budget Mother’s Day ideas

Hi All,

It is my Wife and I’d first Mother’s Day, our twin boys were born 6 weeks ago and I was terribly ill throughout pregnancy and following their birth so we want to make it extra special. Unfortunately I am also being made redundant so we just cannot afford to do anything too extravagant. I was wondering if anyone had some ideas for something lovely to do as a family etc that would be super cheap/ free but still make both of our first Mother’s Day really special. We’ve looked forward to this through 5 years of fertility treatment and I’m really upset that my horrid workplace have ruined it...

How about doing some homemade cards with footprints from the twins? You can buy lots of safe ink online.

The footprints idea will be hard to beat. And cake- even if you can’t bake, loaf cakes are pretty much infallible and there are pages of them in the Waitrose website recipe section. If there is any budget after that - something to spoil her after being pregnant with twins - nice body oil that smells fantastic. Budget on that can be as modest or extravagant as you choose. Congratulations to you both

On another thread people want simple things -
To not have to cook , to have some quiet time, to have a home made card and a few simple flowers.

I don’t think you can beat a homemade card with the twins’ footprints on, You can keep that forever. It’s a misconception that mother’s want big gifts - they just like the day to be noted, to be remembered. Do you and your wife have some favourite sweets? What is your favourite meal? I think you will find that simply spending the day together with your precious twins will be enough in itself.

Definitely footprint card and maybe a home made afternoon tea? Doesn’t need to cost very much

BuffyFanForever · 08/03/2021 09:03

Thanks for the ideas everyone. Definitely spending the day together is important, like the homemade card idea and cake is a great one too.

Apologies if I've got this wrong but I think you're 2 women? If so the giving mum the day off ideas don't work. Could you start a tradition that you do every year from now eg take a family photo (you could use the same location each year or all wear the same colour clothes) or you make a favourite meal together (as the boys get older they'll be more involved)?

I agree with PP about big gifts not needed. A lie in (if that's possible with your feeding routine), bunch of tulips and a homemade card. Make her favourite meal for lunch/dinner, done!

BuffyFanForever · 08/03/2021 09:31

@BabyMoonPie yes we are a 2 Mum family so it’s kind of important for us both to have a special day rather than I just let her have a lie in (although with very noisy babies I might take them for an extra hour as a treat for her, if I can stay awake myself lol...) thank you for family photo idea! Love that! Would be sweet to get one every year as they grow too 😊 . Meal wise also fab anything involving food is a winner for me lol

A lie in, coffee/tea in bed. Special lunch made and a card made with baby hand/foot prints. Set up a memory box maybe with their hospital tags, new baby cards, Mother’s Day card so that going forward you could keep all this stuff together. That could be her gift.

EuroTrashed · 08/03/2021 14:40

family photo idea is lovely! I have a friend who has photographed her kids in the same pose / similar outfits for her Christmas card every year and the collage of them all together is gorgeous.
