Chat Rooms

Where are they now? let me preface this as a lighthearted thread, and absolutely not a dig against forums like mumsnet. long term member who has just name changed.

Just pondering on all the random chat rooms I used to join when I was younger, where you could talk to radom folk about absolutely anything and then dissappear, or cultivate really lovely friendships.

I know/guess they were a breeding ground for perverts and weirdos, but I never encountered the really seedy side of chatrooms and I guess this evening really miss that option of talking to someone, or a group of people in real time about nothing.

So do reaally innocent friendly chatrooms exist anymore?

I "met" my Dh in a yahoo chatroom way back in 2000. We have been married for 18 years. I "met" a lot of interesting and fun people in them, the internet was smaller then and even though there were pervs and weirdos there didnt seem to be as many of them. I used to have the hammer in an MSN room too, could kick people out if I wanted Grin.
My first trip into eyeball, if any one remembers that, was an eye opener. When it first started there were no room just a list of who was on at the time. You would click a name and their web cam was immediately opened. First one that I opened was a dude in a beige woven straw cowboy hat wanking !!!. I was horrified and as it was before cable modems I was watching it come in over the dial up 1 line at a time and it wouldnt shut down till it stopped loading. Didnt go back there for years and by the time i ventured back it was regular chat rooms.
I used to love them back in the day, Im sure they would not be the same now

Chat roulette was an eye opening experience but oddly I couldn't log it off it was just too weird it got interesting!
I used trouble chat room... met some characters then went onto lycos chat room met my first boyfriend and a friend who I am in touch with to this day.
Ah the innocence in me I didn't even think of perverts etc! Obviously I probably chatted happily to them 😄.
Why did MSN chat get banned?

I believe that chat rooms do still exist as I have been watching a documentary on Channel 4 about undercover police paedophile investigators. They act as young children to identify and prosecute paedophiles. It's very difficult to watch but have found it very interesting.

I was amazed that chat rooms exist. I imagine for all the perverts there are honest people on there too, I just think I'd be weary of using them these days whereas in the early days of the Internet I was more naive and innocent and didn't question who I spoke to (but I was older)

MasterOfOne · 08/03/2021 09:37

I agree @GreenHairThingy I think the chatrooms that exist today are not for anything good. like the previous posters, probably when the internet was smaller and i think mainly people had good intentions?

I am probably reflecting through rose tinted glasses as to how innocent and fun it was.

I thought MSN and Yahoo etc was shut down because of radicalisation? don't quote me!

Look for a class or hobby course online. Join a local community group. Have you any hobbies or interests? That could lead to an online group each week. For example, there are cook-a-longs, sew a longs, etc.
If you think about it, anonymous chat rooms don't exist in face to face world because people don't generally want to go and talk to strangers they have nothing in common with. It's much easier to bond over a shared interest.

Can anyone please share how.much they charge/pay per hour for nursery unfunded hours in a charity registered nursery. Particularly looking at NW England.

I was wondering if you could help me. My friend mam has passed away and the wake. and funeral is in the next few days. There is bad blood between my friend and her sister. The 2 families do not acknowledge each other. There is also bad blood between me and her sister because of an assault charge on my son. He was left permanently scarred because her son broke a glass into his head. He was convicted but the fallout is very bitter. How do my family attend the funeral without offering our sympathy to my friends sister family
