Hello 👋🏻
I am currently a SAHM to two young children. I won't be returning to work until they are both at school (youngest is two and a half) but I have been thinking today about what I would like to do and honestly, I'm stuck.
I'm in the very fortunate position that I can afford to retrain and there is no rush for me to go back to work, so I could start part time studying from September (when my youngest starts preschool) if needed. I could also volunteer to gain experience. I have strong work experience/skills but I'm rusty, and don't want to go back to the same industry anyway.
I've not worked for five years. I know I wouldn't go back to earning the same salary, it's not a problem.
Without outing myself too much:
- I am educated to A-level level (although I have done several NVQs and work related qualifications since) and worked full time from leaving college to having children at 31
- I had basic customer service/retail/admin jobs until I was 21
- From 21-31 I worked initially for a start up in an admin role, which progressed over 8 years to setting up a Department solo (ie a department of one, me) to growing this to a Department of 10 internally before the business was sold and I became Head of the Department for the business for the UK (3 locations, with 3 regional Managers reporting to me who had teams reporting to them).
My department was regulatory so a fairly complex area. I reported into the company legal team (I have no legal qualifications).
So I did fairly well but I really didn't enjoy it. I have no wish to return to that industry or role and to be honest with a young family that's not the sort of position I want to hold again.
I have no clue where to start. None. I am also worried that my brain has dissolved into a puddle of sleep deprivation, Hey Duggee and school schedules.
I know I do not want to work with the general public, and would prefer to work solo/from home rather than part of a big office based team again.
Any ideas?
