Is there mush room in the pie?

I am going to make a cottage pie but also have some mushrooms that need using up. Would they be Envy in a cottage pie?

I know I could make spag Bol instead but am trying to reduce carbs so fancied a sweet potato topping for the pie instead of pasta

Interested in yes/no on the mushrooms!

I would put anything veggie-wise in a cottage pie, so long as it’s chopped small enough.

PickAChew · 07/03/2021 14:31

Yeah, fine chopped nice and fine.

Marmite27 · 07/03/2021 14:33

Not in mine. Just mince, onions and gravy.

However at my parents this is known as shepherds pie with socks on. No idea why. And as we only ever had beef, technically it’s cottage pie anyway Hmm

Yep, any veg I have left goes in, just chopped up nice and small.

TigerDroveAgain · 07/03/2021 14:35

Thanks both : it seemed so odd that I didn’t think of googling but turns out there are lots of recipes for cottage pie and mushrooms, who knew (who knew there were recipes for cottage pie, I thought it was just one of those things you made!)

I’m rather looking forward to it now!

We always have carrot and peas in as well.

User1511 · 07/03/2021 14:40

I always have mushrooms in my cottage pie. And carrots, and peas.

brokengate · 07/03/2021 14:41

Yes it will be lovely. You are changing it anyway with topping so anything goes.

I love doing a bolognese base and cheesy mash topping. Comfort food.

Somethingkindaoooo · 07/03/2021 14:41

Sweetcorn also belongs in everything

DramaAlpaca · 07/03/2021 14:41

Carrots in mine, but never mushrooms. Peas on the side, but not in it.

AdaColeman · 07/03/2021 14:44

You can put anything in a cottage pie, such a useful dish! Wine

SoupDragon · 07/03/2021 14:46

Like others have said, you can shove virtually anything in a cottage/shepherds pie.

Lottieskeeper · 07/03/2021 14:47

Always a tin of Baked beans in mine. I'm not sure how the tradition started but my family always check there's beans in it before tucking in.

Londonmummy66 · 07/03/2021 14:49

The more veg the better in this family. Also, if you put loads of veg in the pie you don't have to do any on the side so less work for the cook. Win win.

FuzzyPuffling · 07/03/2021 15:02

Yes. Extra veg is always good.

And I do a half-and-half sweet potato/potato topping. Just because!

Potpourriandpennysweets · 07/03/2021 15:03

Yes, mushrooms if we have them. Onions, celery sometimes, carrots, peas, sometimes sweetcorn. I've never put courgette or peppers in a shepherds pie, though.

springtimesunshine · 07/03/2021 15:04

Ooh yes. I always have diced carrot, sweet potato and onion in mine, it's lovely. Like someone else said the more veg you pack into it the less you need to serve on the side!

TigerDroveAgain · 07/03/2021 15:17

Thanks all!
