Actors who can only play one part

By that I don't mean that they are bad actors but that they are so attached with one character that they always seem to become a caricature of themselves.

So for example yesterday DD and I watched Christopher Robin the movie. As soon as Mark Gatiss came on, despite playing a serious character, all I could see/hear was "Yes Mrs Levinson".

Now watching Night at the museum. Ricky Gervais always sounds like David Brent.

Can anyone think of any other actors that you struggle to see in other roles?

I find Jennifer Aniston always seems to play the same characters, I do enjoy her movies though.

I thought the same until I watched the morning show. She’s so different on that![/quote]
She was really good in that

Brokenchair1 · 06/03/2021 21:03

@judashaacomeintosomemoney yes exactly, actors that are so specific to one character you never see them as anything else. Like Rebel Wilson always just sounds like Fat Amy in any other movie.

Having said that enjoying the thread so don't mind the deviation 😅

Interesting! I thought the opposite!

LadyofMisrule · 06/03/2021 21:13

Have you seen Sean Bean in Accused: Tracie's story? It's a long way from Sharpe.

nixso29 · 06/03/2021 21:20

Jamie Dornan will forever be Paul Spectre to me no matter what other role he plays!

nixso29 · 06/03/2021 21:21

@Heyha

Hugh Grant was in a Guy Ritchie film lately and VERY different (o forget the film title, sorry). And Robin Williams in One Hour Photo made me forget all about Mrs Doubtfire!
The Gentleman? Couldn't get over him in the role it was just wrong!
woodhill · 06/03/2021 21:23

I think Rupert Graves is fairly versatile. He was in Last Tango and Garrows law

JovialNickname · 06/03/2021 21:29

Barry from Eastenders is literally known as that. I don't think even his family call him Shawn anymore.

Abracadabra12345 · 06/03/2021 21:38

@UhtredRagnarson

Hugh grant for me too. But not because he reminds me of one character- because all his characters are identical.

Alan Rickman will always be the sheriff of Nottingham and likewise Kevin Costner will always be Robin Hood for me.

Have you seen Hugh Grant as Jeremy Brett in A Very British Scandal? This is where I thought, OMG he can really, really act!

Alan Rickman played a whole range of characters...

Abracadabra12345 · 06/03/2021 21:40

@Notonthestairs

I thought Hugh Grant did a good job in a very English Scandal and Paddington 2 - posh yes, bumbling no.

Agree with Jennifer Anniston, Jim Parsons and a lot of the Harry Potter cast.

Me too about Hugh Grant
BalloonSlayer · 06/03/2021 21:45

Jeremy Brett ?????

Do you mean Jeremy Thorpe?

Slub · 06/03/2021 21:54

@looseddaughter why the fuck jump on my post when loads of posters have said exactly the same thing?
And for the record I've seen loads of his stuff I like him.

PuppyMonkey · 06/03/2021 21:56

If you think Hugh Grant is playing the same character as Four weddings etc of late, you haven’t been paying attention.

Liam Neeson on the other hand. Grin

I agree with Hugh Great in these dramas. He was excellent in English Scandel.
Happyadventurer · 06/03/2021 21:59

@Judashascomeintosomemoney

Another one...... no matter what he does, Ardal O’Hanlon is always Father Dougal McGuire
I was just going to say just that. No matter what he’s in his character is always the same. He just can’t act and he ruined Death in Paradise for me. I was so glad when he left.
Standrewsschool · 06/03/2021 21:59

DanielRatcliffe was surprisingly good in ‘Escape from Pretoria’ and ‘ My Boy Jack’

TaraR2020 · 06/03/2021 22:07

@Bawdrip Bill Night has a condition that causes his fingers to curl inwards

I think Daniel Radcliffe has worked really hard to become a better actor and he's shaping up into a solid character actor, some of his later work is really good

HopeClearwater · 06/03/2021 22:10

Hugh Grant can really act. As well as Jeremy Thorpe, and the husband in The Undoing, there’s his very nice part in Florence Foster Jenkins.

Liam Neeson started out very differently, if anyone can remember the 1980s...

MyrrAgain · 06/03/2021 22:21

Ken from coronation street. I mean, he doesn't even need to get another acting job as he's been there all his life. But still

Nith · 06/03/2021 22:30

David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst will be forever Delboy and Rodney.

Inspector Frost - Darling Buds of May - Porridge - Butterflies - Goodnight Sweetheart - New Tricks - and much, much more.

Aswad · 06/03/2021 22:31

As absolutely insanely beautiful as he is, Brad Pitt can only play ‘crazy’ well (12 monkeys, Fight Club). Everything else he’s just a bit meh

caoraich · 06/03/2021 22:51

I thought the same about Hugh Grant til I saw the Gentlemen - he's brilliant in it and so different to the bumbling poshos

Sunshinesky1981 · 06/03/2021 22:53

Sodding , sodding Steven Segal... same character in all 20 million films .
Steven Segals wig.... see point above

tsmainsqueeze · 06/03/2021 22:55

Hugh Lawrie - i can only see him as one of the baddies in 101 dalmations.

looseddaughter · 06/03/2021 23:01

Don't really get why everyone is jumping straight from Four Weddings to Paddington re Hugh Grant's career. He did Bridget Jones and About a Boy in between. Both proved he could do more than bumble about poshly and neither, especially Bridget, were exactly art house/indie type ventures that were barely seen.
