Actors who can only play one part

By that I don't mean that they are bad actors but that they are so attached with one character that they always seem to become a caricature of themselves.

So for example yesterday DD and I watched Christopher Robin the movie. As soon as Mark Gatiss came on, despite playing a serious character, all I could see/hear was "Yes Mrs Levinson".

Now watching Night at the museum. Ricky Gervais always sounds like David Brent.

Can anyone think of any other actors that you struggle to see in other roles?

Michael B Jordan is great but a little bit of his will always be Wallace in The Wire for me 🙁

Boobahs · 06/03/2021 19:49

Actors who play the same part regardless of the movie : Jason Statham, Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, Liam Neeson

Actors who will always be one character in my mind: Daniel Radcliffe (and I've never even seen any of the Harry Potter films!), Robert Pattinson just is Edward Cullen and Benedict Cumberbatch will always be Sherlock.

Ratched · 06/03/2021 19:49

Nicholas Cage can only play Nicholas Cage.
And Nicolas Cage is shite.

AmazingCoffee · 06/03/2021 19:50

@ShesMadeATwatOfMePam

Tom hanks just plays himself. There's one or two roles which he stands out and is convincing in, but on the whole - he's just playing himself. I really don't get why he's so popular.
I thought he was great in Sully.
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/03/2021 19:51

That woman who played the Queen in the 1969 TV documentary Royal Family.

She hasn't really moved on, she's very good though and I like her, especially on the stamps and everything.

twilightcafe · 06/03/2021 19:51

Robert Bathurst = posh bloke
Hugh Bonneville = posh bloke
Tom Hardy = nutter

woodhill · 06/03/2021 19:55

Sue Pollard - always Peggy

JackieTheFart · 06/03/2021 19:59

I was thinking about this the other day.

Brett Gelman who was in Fleabag, Love and Stranger Things (admittedly the only things I've seen him in) has just been typecast as a dickhead. Maybe the characters are just all really similar. Maybe he's not a very good actor.

@peak2021

Bill Nighy. I refer to him as playing the part of Bill Nighy, as his performances are all the same it seems. I saw him in a bookshop a few years ago, and he was on the phone to someone, sounding like a script where he plays Bill Nighy.
I thought he was excellent in I capture the castle where he plays a writer. His hands were always stuck in a claw shape and I thought that's so clever as his character used a typewriter and would have stiff hands. Turns out his hands are always stuck in a claw shape in every film.

Emma Watson, Keira Knightly and Helena Bonham Carter have all played many wooden posh girls who can't emote very much because they don't move their mouths properly when they talk. But Helena has broken out of that as she's got older so maybe the others will too. Hard to tell whether it's lack of imagination from casting people or lack of talent in the actors.

Aquagirl19 · 06/03/2021 20:02

Although I like her as an actress and enjoy her films, Cameron Diaz pretty much plays the same character in everything she's in.

jakeyboy1 · 06/03/2021 20:03

Much as I like him James Nesbitt seems to be same in anything that isn't Cold Feet.

Hugh Grant I think has purposefully moved on from bumbling fool, I thought he was great in The Undoing and An English Scandal.

Also Jamie Dornan seems type cast as a dodgy sexual deviant.

user1493494961 · 06/03/2021 20:05

Most Soap actors only play themselves.

Trisolaris · 06/03/2021 20:09

Sarah Chalke is exactly the same in Scrubs, HIMYM and Firefly lane. Same mannerisms, sweet but awkward cute girl.

patternnews · 06/03/2021 20:12

Sean Bean and Dennis Waterman - exactly the same cheeky thug character in everything, but one's got a Yorkshire accent, one's Cockney.

MaudesMum · 06/03/2021 20:14

Hugh Grant has moved into some very different roles recently. In An English Scandal (TV) he was brilliant as Jeremy Thorpe - posh, yes, but also gay/bi and incredibly calculating. He was also very good fun in Paddington II!

PepeSilviaDoesNotExist · 06/03/2021 20:16

I was gonna say Dwayne Johnson. There’s a meme of him where the creator has posted 4 different images of him basically wearing the same outfit. They are all taken from four separate films.

He will always be the big burly hero here to save the day.

StarCourt · 06/03/2021 20:23

@tootyfruitypickle have you seen Baby Driver?

Smelborp · 06/03/2021 20:23

@JesusHRooseveltChristAgain

I find Jennifer Aniston always seems to play the same characters, I do enjoy her movies though.

I thought the same until I watched the morning show. She’s so different on that!

seepingweeping · 06/03/2021 20:26

Jennifer Anniston will always be Rachel.

Mortenharketscheekbones · 06/03/2021 20:26

Danny dyer, but he’s (was) fit, so I’ll let him off

That American actor-comedy that stars with Jennifer aniston a lot-forget his name..Adam?
Actually two of them-the Jewish comedy guy, starred in the films with the baby and parents, god my memory is so shit, damn you long covid!

110APiccadilly · 06/03/2021 20:27

For some reason I can't see Rupert Graves as anyone other than Inspector Lestrade.

FlowEr262 · 06/03/2021 20:27

Michael Caine

Teardrop2021 · 06/03/2021 20:32

Tom cruise same character, Kiera Knightly same character, Rebel Wilson Same character, Anna Kenderick same character, Jennifer anderson same character, Adam Sandler same character

looseddaughter · 06/03/2021 20:41

@Slub

Hugh Grant always plays the same bumbling well spoken English gent a la Four Weddings and a Funeral- still love him though!
He doesn't though - how many of his films/roles have you actually seen?
