40 things for 40

Lighthearted thread, I know that ageing is a privilege that not everyone gets...

I’ve just celebrated my 39th birthday, am feeling more bothered than I thought I’d be at the thought of next years birthday.

To cheer myself up, I’m going to make a list of things to do before I’m 40. We are moving house currently, and have a young family so some of the bucket list type stuff like ‘fly to Vegas’ or ‘drive the Gold Coast’ are not going to be feasible, even excluding Covid.

So far I will....
Develop a proper skincare routine
Only buy matching underwear
Watch the sunrise in a beach

Try wild swimming
Order a tasting menu and paired wines in a swanky restaurant

What other things should I add to my list?
Things that proper grown ups can do?
Small things to challenge or push me, or perhaps treats or experiences.

All suggestions welcome!

Star gaze in a dark sky park
Try to write poetry or short stories about your favourite memories
Revisit favourite places
Try a new sport
(Wild swim is great go for it)
Watch sunset from a hill top
Learn a new skill - dance/shuffle/language

Just a few ideas from a fellow nearly 40er

Learn a language

Glitterkitten24 · 06/03/2021 17:52

Star gaze is a great one thank you!
I’ve also considered creative writing in the past but never had time, maybe I’ll give that a shot.

Thank you, some great ideas!

Some that would be on mine, might give you some ideas as I’ve stolen some from yours 😄:

Learn to do a handstand
Get a cat
Spontaneous weekends away (would love a camper van to make this easier but not essential)
Safari, Canada, and Europe road trip (probably a lot to ask with 1 year to go)
Learn car maintenance
Have friends over more

Glitterkitten24 · 06/03/2021 18:42

Thank you, I actually am a bit pathetic about maintaining my car, I would definitely feel more adult if I could so that!

Adding it to the list!

Try a brand new recipe every week
365 photos one a day for the whole year
Read (or re-read) 12 favourite books

Draw/paint/make a piece of art that means something to you, sort out a pension (I know...dull dull dull), do a cookery/cocktail making class, read a book from a different genre than you usually would, find some poetry you love, go a walking/running challenge.... do a 5k, or one of the Conquerer challenges, write your autobiography, watch a film in a foreign language, volunteer for something...animal care/people/environmental etc.

Glitterkitten24 · 06/03/2021 20:58

Wonderful suggestions! Thank you!
I’d love to do a cookery class, added to my list!

Any other suggestions?

I had own an original art work and try welding on mine. Also do something that scares you!

backinthebox · 06/03/2021 21:17

Don’t bother with 40 little things that anyone could do. Pick something, one thing, and go big. Want to take up running? Do a marathon. Want to climb a mountain? Make it a big one, eg Kilimanjaro or the 3 Peaks in one day. Commit to doing something that will really change you for the better, that you will always look at and think ‘I can’t believe I did that!’ It will give you something you will always value, and a huge sense of achievement.

Skinny dip
Have al fresco sex
Learn to make a really fancy meal
Learn more about wine to go with the really fancy meal
Not sure if they’ll go ahead this year but do a Macmillan mighty hike or similar event
Something that scares you like a big zip wire or caving.
