This isn't a royal family bashing thread..just interested to know how people would vote once the Queen has died and the was a vote on whether to keep the royal family or not.. a simple yes ( to keep ) or no.

Silurian - I’m back to work today so no time to go into detail but I’m not talking about the pope at all. Some people in NI feel British, some Irish, some a bit of both and some neither. I imagine lots don’t care either way. The RF is a symbol of the ‘British’ side this some people put a lot of importance on that symbol. Remember it was a very big deal when the leader of Sinn Fein met the queen a few years ago cos it was a symbol of healing on both sides.

Changing the status quo would mean a lot of people in GB taking a (arbitrary) side and digging in, tagging it to lots of other tribal positions on other matters. As has been pointed out this change would be in pursuit of a largely symbolic change. The last thing we need is more tribalism imo.

I’d happily get rid of all the ‘fat’ such as the detestable ‘lord’ matt Ridley - a heredity lord of the Manor type and a man who comes under almost no scrutiny because he’s below the radar.

Yes, I’m Irish, as I assumed was obvious. You’re way overstating the importance of the monarchy to NI unionists. It is about as relevant as the papacy is to nationalists, ie primarily shorthand for graffiti. Unionists are in general no more invested in the monarchy than the general run of British people and are perfectly capable of considering their loyalty to the British state separately to whoever is head of that state.

In my experience, it’s more Orange Order types who are keener on it, and even they aren’t mad about Charles’ intention of being ‘Defender of Faith’ rather than ‘THE Faith’. And for hardline religious fundamentalists the Queen is a less-than-ideal figure because she drinks alcohol and is highly involved in horse racing (closely associated with gambling).

Few or no public figures in NI advocate the abolition of the monarchy, any more than they do elsewhere, because why would you throw away votes? But there’s zero reason to think the the monarchy is some kind of stabilising force in NI.

More for the sake of those in it. I dont think it negatively effects most of the country (in fact they contribute more if anything). But for the longer term, it should go.
