When does Harry Potter get scary?

DC is a sensitive 6.5 yr old. Just watched the philosophers stone and she really enjoyed it. She wants to watch the next one but I can't remember when they get scary and dark... am I safe with 1,2 and 3?

2 has scary spiders and basilisk
3 has dementors

GrilledCheeze · 05/03/2021 20:18

3 the dementors come in. Depends how you think she will cope with them.

I had DS read the books first mainly because I thought his imagination would be gentler than seeing it on the screen.

Think it depends on your child. My child is fine with all of them, even the last one, apart from number 2. She’s scared of the basilisk.

I’d say 3, agree with others, the dementors give me the colliwobbles and I’m 49.5 years older than your daughter 😁

(When do we stop counting in halves?)

I have an almost 6 year old daughter and we have watched 1 and 2 with no worries on her part (and read both books). I was a bit worried about the basilisk but it she took that in her stride - possibly because we had read the book first so it wasn’t unexpected.

We’re going to read book 3 together but I’m not going to let her watch the film until I watch it again myself first, as I seem to recall it was quite a lot more scary than the first two.

amusedbush · 06/03/2021 00:06

I read the first three books when I was 9 and Chamber of Secrets scared the shit out of me Blush the disembodied voice in the walls, going down into the chamber... I couldn’t read it before bed Grin

The films are a bit more tame but I think Prisoner of Azkaban could be scary for a 6.5yo - the Dementors are creepy!

ATowelAndAPotato · 06/03/2021 00:09

My nearly 7yo DD was fine with the first three films. She didn’t like the dementors overly but has asked to watch the film again so can’t have been too scary for her. I’m not letting her watch the others for a while though, they definitely get darker.

1 and 2 are fairly tame. Two does have spiders and a giant snake.

I was crapping it right about the time when Quirrell took off his turban...
