Is there any way of updating an iPad 3 rd gen?

It's only used for YouTube for my son for a short time each day but it's constantly coming up asking to update but then it won't let us.
So we really have to buy a new iPad or is there anyway of updating these?

The chances are the apps you're using require a minimum operating system (iOS something or other). If your iPad will no longer update to that version then yes, its basically obsolete.

Can you use youtube through Safari instead of the app?

With some you need to update by connecting to your computer and using iTunes

Although Gen 3 won't be able to update past 9.3.5 or something similar so you will not get the most recent updates
