Ds wanted an iron man cake for his birthday today and I wanted to make him one.

Found a video that looked easy and thought “I could do that!”

Well...the video lied.! It was not easy.

But after lots of stress, I finally managed to make a pull away iron man cupcake cake.

Hope ds likes it

Cake makers....how the hell do you manage to make the buttercream so smooth with a pallette knife?!

Can I please show off my cake I made?

I think it looks great!

wizzywig · 04/03/2021 09:49

Just eat it, it looks yum! I'm sure your son loved it. If not, I'll pm you my address for next year.

Oh it's brilliant, bloody well done. I bet he loves it!

I'm no buttercream expert but I use a warm palette knife - have a glass of hot water next to you and use that whenever the knife gets gummed up/ cools down. If you're feeling super fancy, have two knives on the go so you've always got one in the glass of hot water ready to take over. Hope that's some help with your next creation!

It looks great and he will love it because his mummy made it for him Flowers

Soubriquet · 04/03/2021 09:57

Thank you!

I shall try the hot water trick next time too

Superb effort, well done you!

Happytentoes · 04/03/2021 10:07

Well done you! I can just about bake a sponge, but decorating it terrifies me. I am very impressed 😁

emmathedilemma · 04/03/2021 10:09

That's fab! Buttercream is the work of the devil and i don't think you'd ever get it very smooth going over cupcakes like that. You need to do a "crumb coat" with it lightly and then build it up in a couple of layers so it doesn't bring crumbs from the cake up with it.
Ready to roll icing covers a multitude of sins ;)

minou123 · 04/03/2021 10:09

Well done you. Its really good.

It's too early for this. Dust in my eye
Seatime · 04/03/2021 10:11

Great colours and sculpting!

missrm · 04/03/2021 10:11

Awhhh. Good job! Very gently smooth a bit of kitchen paper over the top of it to even out the texture on the top! X

LaceyBetty · 04/03/2021 10:18

My kids would absolutely love that. I looks great!

chillibeansauce · 04/03/2021 10:23

Looks amazing ! I want a slice of cake now !

vixeyann · 04/03/2021 10:44

Your son will love that and bet it tastes great (I am a buttercream fiend!). Hope he has a lovely birthday :) I find the buttercream always spreads well if you heat the knife x

Soubriquet · 04/03/2021 13:16

He loved it Grin

I did a buttercream icing cake instead of fondant because he finds fondant too sweet. He won’t eat normal birthday cake and will even pick at it at parties just to be polite.

He probably did find this sweet too but nicer than fondant.

He wasn’t impressed by the messiness though Grin

Still, chuffed to bits it worked out

That looks amazing. Love the bold colours. Smile

Dr Oekter food colouring

It’s a gel rather than a liquid and it’s extra strong colouring
