Facebook: Anyone know this cat?

MaryJanes · 01/03/2021 14:45

On my local town facebook group, there's been quite a few posts recently with pictures of cats followed by:
"Anybody know who this cat belongs to? Been meowing a lot"

Or

"Cat is outside my house. Anybody know who this is?"

"Cat is still in my garden"

And then there are pictures underneath of cats just minding their own business - like just sitting on a pavement or lying on grass in the sun.

But what annoys me the most is somebody always comments with,
"If nobody claims this cat, i don't mind rehoming it'

And I don't get it!!
Where people find cats a nuisance or not (i personally love cats), cats are allowed to roam the streets so AIBU to think people are going over the top putting pictures up of cats as if they are abandoned and then talking about rehoming them? I personally don't get why somebody would take a picture of a cat, especially one that just looks like it's sunbathing in this lovely weather.

God I hate this too, like it’s just a cat being a cat what do people expect? Confused

CaptainVanesHair · 01/03/2021 14:51

Everyday on our local ones. I can understand if it’s been there a week but loads of ours are ‘this cat just turned up ten minutes ago...’ and then you’ll get loads of people tagging people they know with cats in the comments, invariably replied to with ‘nope, our polly is a tabby’

I think some people do it because there’s also a lot of missing cat posts on our page and it’s easier than trying to find the posts.

We get this all the time on my local Facebook group. Usually “looks well fed / in good condition”

Followed by “can you take it to a vet to check the chip?”

Leave the cat alone! It’s fine!

I have posted a cat photo before - but only because he had been in our garden a few days and was obsessed with getting into our house! As soon as anyone opened the door he’d dash in. And we have a dog that would happily eat a cat. The lady who owned him came and got him and we haven’t seen him again! I wouldn’t normally post mug shots of cats when they’re happily minding their own business though!

I understand that as an unknown cat coming into your house would be annoying!
It's the ones in which the cat is just sitting/lying on a pavement minding it's own business I don't understand

I am guilty of a post like that. Cat started turning up at our house every night. I couldn't tell if it was well fed or not, as it was very fluffy, and it wouldn't let me touch it. I took advice from a local cat charity, and advertised to see if anyone would claim it. No one did, so we started feeding it. Eventually after further attempts to trace an owner, paper collar etc, we trapped it and took it to the vet. Not chipped or neutered, so we got it done. Three months later he still turns up every night. I'm not sure what else we could have done TBH.

We've got loads of 'do you know this cat?' on the Nextdoor app.

Recently spiced up with a budgie in a chicken coop and a cockatiel being chased by crows - although both of those are clearly actually lost!

This cracks me up Grin I have to laugh, or I’m going to cry!
My old neighbourhood had a serial catnapper who would rush to “rescue” cats in response to every “there’s a cat in my garden” post. They finally catnapped the wrong kitty and an angry family blew up the local Spotted page.

sporky · 01/03/2021 15:50

I have a family member that does this. Her daughter has also inherited this obsession with other people cats and is always posting pictures of a seemingly well fed, well looked after cat that's just chilling outside. She also shares "cat lost, Cork, Ireland, 2018" to her 42 friends in the midlands 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yeah I see this a lot on fb too on local groups - “dropped my keys on the way home from middlesborough park, pls share to get them reunited” then hundreds of posts with “shared in lands end, Cornwall”

Yeah super helpful cheers

emmathedilemma · 01/03/2021 15:57

oh they are the worst @ShirleyPhallus I have a facebook friend who does this and she's a highly intelligent professional but seemingly can't read the basics of a facebook post!

QueenPaw · 01/03/2021 16:08

Mine likes to pretend he's dead in the garden until he gets a crowd and then snap one eye open making everyone jump. I fully expect to see him on FB one day Hmm
