Happy St David's day to all! May we dress up as Welsh ladies with a mouldy leek mam has found in the back of the cupboard haphazardly pinned to our coat. We'll have an early morning assembly singing Sosban Fach and Calon Lan, and spend the afternoon colouring in pictures of the ddraig goch.
Even better a St David's following Saturdays game Grin Shame there diesnt seem to be any daffs in the shops.

Back in my day, St David's Day was a half-day and we all went home at lunch-time. The boys would all dare each other to eat their leeks raw on the way home. I remember one poor lad whose mam sent him in with an absolutely massive leek, but he did eat a fair bit of it before admitting defeat!

coldemortreturns · 01/03/2021 12:18

I seem to both remember going home half day, and also afternoons colouring in flags! Can't have done both, damn memory! Definitely dont remember eating raw leeks though, think that one would have stayed with me Grin

We've already had homeschool assembly and heard 400 crackly voices singing Calon Lan, and then done Tasg Un which was to make Welshcakes. I've shrieked "Don't touch the bakestone!" more times than I can count but we ended up with lovely hot Welshcakes for lunch so all is well. Off to colour some dragons 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I remember sitting in the freezing cold of St David’s cathedral for the annual schools service. There was always some twit at secondary school who ate his leek.

We made Welsh cakes and bara brith yesterday.

No dressing up as we’re in England but I’m going to read DS some of The Mabinogion.

That assembly sounds lovely @LemonySippet.

coldemortreturns · 01/03/2021 13:39

Assembly sounds lovely. Was wondering how it was going to be celebrated in lockdown :)
I cant seem to get hold of the £1 daffs. Seem to remember reading an article that farmers were struggling to get pickers so they were all being left to rot in fields Sad

We haven't been able to get daffs either :(

WellTidy · 01/03/2021 16:31

I got six bunches of £1 daffs yesterday in M&S. I’d have been absolutely devastated not to have them for today. Lucky me. I hope the emoticon daffs are helping those who weren’t so lucky! They’re my first of the year, thanks to online shops and food deliveries lately. Always had a half day when I was in school too - must have been hard for working parents.

spiderlight · 01/03/2021 16:39

DH went to our local M&S on Friday and said there was not a daff to be had. First year I've ever had a daff-less St David's day, as the ones in our garden haven't bloomed yet either.

rockingthelook · 01/03/2021 19:53

Got my daffs, and lovely to see them out on the grass verges by the sides of the roads too, fab weather here today in Gods own country. I miss when my girls would dress up for school and the local schools would have a parade. Nothing like a themed lunch at work, leek and potato soup, roast lamb and bara brith or welsh cakes afterwards

I had leek and potato soup for lunch, Welsh cakes for pudding and i have daffodils in my grey Welsh brethyn jug.

And its a glorious day so i went for a mountain walk before sunset. Beautiful 🌞

peak2021 · 01/03/2021 20:31

I purposely looked for daffodils on my daily walk and did see a few.

Happy St David's Day to all Welsh MNers and those with Welsh heritage.

muddlepiddle · 01/03/2021 21:42

I always remember my mum with a hairdryer trying to get the daffodils in the vase to open
