Bedtime story books for a reception aged boy

I've just read James and the Giant peach ( over a couple of weeks) to DS, but I think it was a bit too much and he found it boring he said. He seems to have lost interest in all the Gruffalo type short stories. Only thing he likes is a short Robin Hood we have by Usborne at the moment. Any suggestions for me to read to him please ?

The Runaway Pea is popular here as a shorter story picture book. Funny and he can recite the pages - shows how much of a favourite it is!

The Harry and the Dinosaurs books are also a hit here. Might be because they are dinosaur fanatics Hmm

My son is in reception too. In your post you said you read Robin Hood by Usbourne. Have you seen the picture book gift set? It's got all the classic stories, each one takes about 10 minutes to read. They are so well illustrated and although we read them over and over, there's always a new talking point. His current favourite is The Emperor's New Clothes, he laughs at the Emperor's " botty" on display and we talk about "Slimus and Slick", the bad guys. I think these books really stimulate a child's imagination.

Enid Blyton - the Faraway Tree series and the Wishing Chair series
Alison Uttley - her books about Sam Pig and also the Tim Rabbit books - old-fashioned but both of my boys have been quite captivated by them, the animal main characters get into all sorts of scrapes and adventure.
Jeremy Strong - Indoor Pirates
