At school I hated history and stopped doing it as soon as I could. As an adult I absolutely love history and have learnt a lot of modern history. But I realise now I’m actually quite ignorant of history before 1900. Kings/queens etc and how they all link in with each other.

Anyone care to recommend an easy (not dry) read which might bring me up to speed? Even if it’s a period of history rather than everything! Thank you.

Have you tried putting in a request with your local library? They may be able to put together a selection of books for you to try out.

I absolutely love This Septered Isle for a great overview of British history up until the twentieth century.

Ian Mortimer's Time Travellers Guides cover various periods and are really good at painting a general picture of life in that era.

Thank you - will check these out. Our local library has been hit very badly with council budget cuts and is only open at limited times.

Time travellers guides are brilliant- I second that.
Also the Silk Roads, amazing book- so interesting but not just a British focus...
