Poo in cat food - advice on complaining

Our cat has pouch type cat food that comes in a big box of 20 or so sachets. This morning we opened a new box and the most disgusting smell came out. The pouches were covered with nasty brown stuff that I am guessing was fox poo. The kitchen now stinks and I’m worried about all the food the box was kept next to in the cupboard. I chucked the entire lot in the bin but not before I had unfortunately got some on hands. It was really gruesome and I was sick once I realised what it was. Because the poo was inside the container I’m guessing that the incident happened at the factory that makes it. It was really gross and it makes me worry about their hygiene standards. I want to make a complaint. Any advice on what I’ll need to do - do I need to fish the horrible box out of the bin and keep it? 🤮 I’ve taken lots of photos.

Not quite sure how you have ascertained it's poo. Split pouch gone off would be more likely?

Could it have been pouches that has burst as turned rancid? I'm finding it hard to see how a fox or other animal could have got inside a factory, opened a box and pooed in it.

It does sound unlikely to be poo. It's pretty horrible, though, so can you get it to environmental health to be tested?

This. I think it's a little unlikely to actually be poo. I'm not sure how that would even happen tbh.

I’d contact the supplier before the manufacturer. They may want to do a recall. I would imagine photos would suffice.

Oh god a burst cat food pouch smells absolutely revolting like something died, even worse smell than fox poo. I had to take a box back to Tesco and plonk it on their Customer Services Desk it was disgusting.

I worked in a factory packing pet food one summer as a student. If a tin went off it would explode from the gases building up and cover everything in rancid dog/cat food. It's really one of the most disgusting things I've ever experienced

I think it's very unlikely an animal has managed to poo in the box- we use to pack the pouches into the mixed boxes by hand on a conveyer belt and then they were sealed by a machine at the end. An animal would have had to break into the box after that point.

Far more likely a pouch has gone rotten and exploded.

Sobloodyexhausted · 26/02/2021 09:36

It had the worst smell you can imagine but yes I think you are right a burst packet is a lot more likely!😃 I didn’t realise that it could smell that gross!

Burst pouches reek to high heaven, I've had it happen more than once and I can fully understand why you thought fox poo, the smell is unbelievable.

TheDoctorDances · 26/02/2021 09:37

It’s rancid, rotting cat food. I had the same issue with a cat food box earlier this year, one of the worst things I’ve smelt and I’ve worked some mucky jobs.

Sobloodyexhausted · 26/02/2021 09:47

Can’t tell you how relived I am that I did not in fact put my hands in something that had been in an animal’s bowels. My hands have never been scrubbed so much though 😂

Happened to me with an online order. Reading some reviews it’s clear that it happens now and again. I threw the damaged sachet away and washed the remaining ones in a bowl. Job done.

I actually lost a cat for a whole year after an incident with a rancid cat food pouch. It has obviously got a hole in it and gone bad. When I opened it, the baby screamed, I puked and the cat shot out of the back door and never came back.

It really is that bad.

It was one I those smells that felt like it was still lingering in my nose hours after it was all cleaned up. I will never forget it.

Yes, even though I had handed it all back to Tesco, I still thought I could smell it for days after.

Yep another one that has had a split pouch, I can understand why your first thought would be poo
