Can i make ikea gravy without whipping cream?

I bought a packet last time I was in Ikea, just looked at the instructions and it says whipping cream, who has whipping cream in their fridge? well not me.

What can I use instead? Would a bit more milk and a knob of butter be ok do you think?

I think whipping cream is what some other countries call double cream? Not sure though.

Etherealhedgehog · 25/02/2021 18:31

Yep, I always use double cream in recipes that call for whipping cream

Mmmmdanone · 25/02/2021 18:32

I use a bit of milk. Tastes the same, maybe better as not too creamy.

I didn't last time I made it, realised that I was buying a whole tub just for a spoonful. It didn't make the slightest bit of difference.

Flapjak · 25/02/2021 18:32

I think i used single or double cream

noeffingwayyyy · 25/02/2021 18:33

I make it with double cream. I reckon milk would make it really thin but if you use full fat and thicken with flour you might be ok...

Mn753 · 25/02/2021 18:33

Use milk and less water.

Yabu though, I carefully plan my ikea meals with cream. I make sure I have a big row with my Dh as well beforehand so I get an authentic experience.

PeakyPaula · 25/02/2021 18:34

No cream at all in the fridge. I'm going to use milk.

Thanks.
Was going to make meatballs with tomato sauce/pasta and did a huge swerve when I saw the packet and thought, meatballs and chips mmmmmmmmm

I make it with all milk, skip the water. It thickens fine.

ElizabethofpeanutYorkies · 25/02/2021 18:37

@Peaky single, double , whipping.. any cream will suffice . as long as its cream. Its the thick consistency that is key. I have even used buttermilk and it was all ok!

I personally have all creams in my fridge at all times. Milk indeed....

Let this Ikea gravy incident be a lesson to you!

ThriceAsNaice · 25/02/2021 18:52

I use all milk instead of cream and water. Nobody here has ever noticed the difference.

Lol! Ikea wouldn’t be Ikea without a row Grin

bilbodog · 25/02/2021 18:57

Cornflour to thicken if you need to.

Bimblybomeyelash · 25/02/2021 18:57

Wow all cream at all times ElizabethofpeanutYorkies? I would be the size of a house!

ElizabethofpeanutYorkies · 25/02/2021 19:07

@Bimblybomeyelash i use sparingly. I am actually skinny as a pancake ( lie as no one can see me on line)

But, i am an avid baker... i always have a full range of creams. Sometimes i need to make a chocolate mouse, sometimes i need a butterscotch sauce, sometimes i need to make a chocolate fudge sauce.... every now and then the need for a strawberry pav overwhelms me. I genuinely always have creams in my fridge. What i do not use, i mix with eggs and make quiche!

Here is a little one i have waiting in the fridge ...

But @ElizabethofpeanutYorkies Elmlea isn’t real cream! Grin

@PeakyPaula I use Greek yogurt if I don’t have cream in. To stop it splitting I mix a bit of cornflour in it.

That isn't cream.

It's vegetable fat and thickeners

MaryIsA · 25/02/2021 19:20

@ElizabethofpeanutYorkies. Really that’s not cream.

CompleteBarstool · 25/02/2021 19:25

Gravy using cream? Confused

Am I missing something here? Nobody else that's commented has seemed to think it's weird.

phew thank goodness u said that i was thinking the same thing too
ElizabethofpeanutYorkies · 25/02/2021 19:28

No , its a long life substitute. I always have in on standby!

I had Waitrose full 300ml double cream in yesterday but used it in a Victoria sponge today. I am going go M&S tomorrow to replenish fridge so full creams will all be restored.

i still could have used it and made the Ikea gravy today though! 😜

Haha you’ve cheered my evening!
Toomanycats99 · 25/02/2021 19:29

I make a Swedish meatballs recipe and it uses a roux made with beef stock not milk and then add some creme fraiche.

snowblower · 25/02/2021 19:30

Wtf , cream in gravy?

ElizabethofpeanutYorkies · 25/02/2021 19:31

@welldone The Ikea gravy is more a kind of stroganoff like sauce, hence the cream.
