I bought a packet last time I was in Ikea, just looked at the instructions and it says whipping cream, who has whipping cream in their fridge? well not me.

What can I use instead? Would a bit more milk and a knob of butter be ok do you think?

I’m amazed that there are confused people on this thread - the only people in the western world who haven’t had IKEA meatballs.

Oh please put us out of our misery and somebody clarify the whole cream in gravy issue! The mind boggles.
Disclaimer: I’ve only ever been to ikea once 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Ahh, cross posts, I see the explanation thank you Grin

I just use milk instead and less water. I love the IKEA gravy!

PurpleFadesToGreen · 25/02/2021 19:50

We just use milk and no water.
So whatever the full fluid amount is us just milk instead of 60ml cream and whatever water.

IKEA meatballs have sauce, not 'gravy'.

It's a creamy sauce.

I make a roux, butter and flour, then add oxo beef stock, then lots of Lea and Perrins, then cream, double or single.

Fuss · 25/02/2021 20:16

Thats because it's not gravy. It's a sauce.

I use milk for all of it as someone else said above. I also spent years lovingly cooking the meatballs in the oven until I accidentally discovered they were a million times more authentic to the store ones if microwaved.

Been to IKEA and eaten there a fair few times but I'm vegetarian so that might explain it.

Mind you DP and the teenagers often have meatballs but I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't have clue that the gravy has cream in it.

(Glad I wasn't the only one who couldn't get their head round it though!)

looking at that recipe as i do not have a single one of those ingredients in my house will stick to bolognese sauce on me meatballs

redcandlelight · 25/02/2021 21:02

I just use half milk half water. very rarely have cream at home.
other gravy granules made up with half milk half water work nicely as well

QueenArseClangers · 25/02/2021 21:30

Phew @ElizabethofpeanutYorkies! You’re obviously a dairy pro Smile

daisydalrymple · 25/02/2021 21:38

Elizabethofpeanutyorkies thanks!

Lisyloo725 · 25/02/2021 21:40

I’ve always used full fat milk that I do have in the fridge - and it’s been fine!

snowblower · 25/02/2021 22:00

I've never been to Ikea, didn't even know they had a cafe in them.

ElizabethofpeanutYorkies · 25/02/2021 22:41

@Queen😉

feistyoneyouare · 25/02/2021 22:42

Hope you're making it with fresh IKEAs.

I've never been to Ikea let alone had their meatballs or gravy.
DiscustinHunAmFummin · 25/02/2021 23:05

Never mind cream, have you got lingonberry jam???

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/02/2021 23:08

I've never used cream, I use a little less water and a bit more milk, it thickens fine.

Whipping cream is somewhere between single and double. You can't use elmlea or canned cream as it's usually sweetened.

GeidiPrimes · 25/02/2021 23:08

Cream is nice in all gravy, not just Ikea.

MissDollyMix · 25/02/2021 23:10

Ahh I’m going to have to hide this thread! I am now craving IKEA meatballs, gravy, chips and ‘berries’ as they always call them at our local IKEA Smile

Toomanycats99 · 26/02/2021 06:09

Foe those that don't live near IKEA iceland also do frozen Swedish style meatballs. Not quite as good but better than battling IKEA weekend traffic just for a pack of meatballs!
