People with money and means where do they go in UK winter

It's hard enough without covid but people with means, not super wealthy, where do they go in winter? Skiing? Thailand? It's just so hard the UK winter and boring....

OP posts:

Skiing. A week in the (hopefully) sunny bright mountains, literally and figuratively on top of the world, can compensate for months of UK dreich (sp?)

Bearnecessity · 24/02/2021 02:27

Aviemore for skiing...

GothamGirl1970 · 24/02/2021 02:34

No where. Covid. But Barbados is amaze

Insertfunnyname · 24/02/2021 02:46

Skiing and Caribbean. Antigua and Barbados are both lovely.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/02/2021 05:53

For a holiday or for longer than that?

I know someone with a holiday home in Spain and they spend most of the winter there.

I can't afford a holiday home but I'm going to the Caribbean next winter for a holiday.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/02/2021 06:26

Canaries or southern Spain are more accessible, canaries more reliable weather.

People sometimes get long term deals on accommodation to make it more affordable.

But what do you mean about UK winters being 'boring'? What is it you want to do but can't? You seem to be talking about non covid times.

DinosaurDiana · 24/02/2021 06:28

Canaries.

TheTeenageYears · 24/02/2021 06:48

I suspect there would be quite different answers depending on if it's for a 1-2 week holiday or 3+ months stint. Short holiday skiing, Dubai, Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Caribbean, South Africa. Longer duration Spain, Cyprus, South Africa, Malta, Madeira

BoogleMcGroogle · 24/02/2021 07:04

We spend a week each February in the Alps. We mostly ski, walk and eat cheese. In my view, January and February in the U.K. have no redeeming features. Although I quite like a winter weekend in London.
DH family all spend time in the Cape (SA). BILs both work from there (writer and software designer) for a month or so.
My parents spend three weeks in Mallorca. Walking and bird watching.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 24/02/2021 07:16

Canaries are disgusting. I went once and wont be going back.

Skiing usually. France is the obvious choice, but Switzerland is lovely. Italy is also good but a much slower pace. Or if you wanted to go further, Lake Tahoe is absolutely incredible. I really miss skiing.

For a hotter holiday id be looking a Sri Lanka, or Kerala in India. Obviously very much depends what you want. I thought Dubai wasnt great - loads of wealth thrown in your face to cover an appalling human rights track record.

There are seven Canary islands. I assume that you did no research and went to one of the tiny areas of one of the larger islands that's aimed at the 'Brits in the sun' crowd and ignored the other 99% that's perfectly lovely.

Guidebutton · 24/02/2021 07:26

Balmoral?

BirthChoice · 24/02/2021 07:29

I have a fantasy that I live in the UK March-September and NZ September-March. Of course, jobs, family, friends, life all get in the way!

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 24/02/2021 07:30

Ive been to a majority of them and found them to be rocky and barren mainly.

MinnieMountain · 24/02/2021 07:34

I had a housemate when I lived in Germany who spent the winter living in Thailand.

My dad and his DP used to go to India for 2 weeks every December.

idontlikealdi · 24/02/2021 07:36

Skiing mostly USA

scryingeyes · 24/02/2021 07:38

My new job means that I will only be able to take a holiday in Jan - Feb and have been thinking about this.
Though at the moment I couldn't afford more than two weeks away.
Daydreaming is enough for now.

JackieWeaverFever · 24/02/2021 07:53

We do okay (not mad money)
In November we do canaries or Oman
Feb/mar we go skiing.

Carribean is not our jam but v popular with our friends.

Exhausteddog · 24/02/2021 07:58

I live in a fairly affluent area. Almost everyone seems to go skiing in the winter (sometimes a family trip and separately for a friends/girls/lads trip)

Mumblechum0 · 24/02/2021 08:05

We generally go away for a few weeks, sometimes a couple of months to avoid the worst of the weather.

Faves are

Maldives
Australia, esp Tasmania
Morocco

In Jan 2020 we just had a couple of weeks in La Palma, one of the v quiet Canaries, hiking in the mountains.

Mumblechum0 · 24/02/2021 08:07

Oh yes forgot about the Caribbean, you have to be careful where you go, tho, some is a bit too Americanised for us. South coast Jamaica or Blue Mountains is beautiful

supersonicginandtonic · 24/02/2021 08:10

We usually have a week in January/February in the Canaries. Lovely weather but not too hot if you have little ones.

Atrixie · 24/02/2021 08:10

Canaries are not disgusting. What a stupid thing to say. Lanzarote at least is beautiful

Christmas, is when people do their big travel holidays, long haul - Thailand. Australia, vietnam, South Africa, Mauritius. Skiing at Feb half term but I hate skiing so give that a miss

whenwillthemadnessend · 24/02/2021 08:12

I wouldn't class us a rich but we are comfortable. We have a week sking in feb most years but this is because my dh loves skiing. Always has even when we were not as fortunate I would not say it's a lifestyle thing.

Sometimes we have a few days away over Xmas in uk self catered

I know people that have gone long haul over Xmas but we never have.

CherryRoulade · 24/02/2021 08:12

Usually do a couple of long weekends in Iceland. Then sometimes a longer break in January/February; India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Norway. Only ten days or so, we like British weather.
