It's hard enough without covid but people with means, not super wealthy, where do they go in winter? Skiing? Thailand? It's just so hard the UK winter and boring....

Its not a stupid thing to say at all. Its my opinion. My opinion is not 'stupid'. Do you always call opinions that are at odds with yours 'stupid'?

I found the touristy bits horrible and the rest barren and bleak. I think im justified regardless of you agreeing or not.

LongTimeMammaBear · 24/02/2021 08:41

Before covid restrictions became tighter, my DD is a nanny for wealthy people. Tgey have a villa in old Ibiza and were there in the summer. They did Christmas and new year in Maldives. Half term was in south of France on a yacht and they’ll be doing their next break to Caribbean. She’s travelled more during covid than ever before due to this job.

SpringisSpinning · 24/02/2021 08:41

Mumble are you child free or older dc now? And I guess no job that ties you.

That's what I'd I love to aim for, a good chunk of time in exciting places in January and then March!!

Barbara I mean places with snow, can look forward to a whole different array of sports and activities in winter. Eg fishing holes on ice ponds, ice skating, skiing, snow boarding, snow mobiles... Husky rides... And so on.

Here it's wet, muddy... I don't like January or February or March her!

Our jobs means we tend to Holiday in January in the last few years we’ve done

Portugal twice - cheap as chips not much over £150 per week 5 star with hire car and flights b&b in the Algarve

Barnados - again cheap holiday self catering 16 days loved it.

Ghana - one of our best holidays ever so unexplored and again cheap

Lanzarote- enjoyed but cold and windy

USA - Arizona / California - cold but cracking few weeks.

Hoping to do South Africa next year as have missed this year and will have to work the rest of the Year.

I would have thought Iceland or Scandinavia etc would be good for those things, or Canada, or the Alps or Andorra for the skiing and snowboarding.

Not the cheapest, but don't need to be super wealthy either, if you look for deals and make compromises - eg stay in an apartment and cook supermarket food instead of eating out.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/02/2021 09:01

Or Scotland is having its best ski season for a long time, just a shame no-one can go, but in normal times, definitely worth keeping an eye on conditions and looking for something at short notice.

Nearlyadoctor · 24/02/2021 09:04

We love Finnish Lapland specifically for XC skiing, but always hire snowmobile’s and get some horse riding in as well.

Autumnspice · 24/02/2021 09:05

Now that we have school age children it’s a weeks skiing in feb half term. Usually France or Switzerland.
Pre children, it would be skiing and a long haul holiday to the Maldives/Caribbean

Madeira, take a villa
Or if I can face long haul, Riviera Maya, stay in hotel

DarthWeeder · 24/02/2021 09:18

Barbados is beautiful. It’s our retirement plan for hopefully about 10 years time, we will go over there for 3 months a year in winter.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 24/02/2021 09:23

Oh yes, Bali. The north or the middle of the island though, the southern part is a bit touristy.

0rch1dF0REST · 24/02/2021 09:23

One holiday
Canaries apartment with pool
Self cater
£150 per person includes flights for a week & accommodation
Not in school holidays

Trainerdilemma · 24/02/2021 09:24

Pre Dd (when I worked lots and we had more money 🤣) we’d always book somewhere to fill up the worst months-Jan-March for me. We went to Thailand or went snowy, Switzerland or Sierra Nevada. Over autumn and Christmas we’d generally go home to the U.K. (we live abroad) so would have the main sun and heat and stay where we are May-October. If we couldn’t do winter, we’d book a cheaper one in Ibiza in April when it’s quieter...oh how I miss travel!

SomeRandomerOnBumsnet · 24/02/2021 09:25

We go snowboarding twice (once in December depending on the snow and then again in early March - we like to board in the sun). We usually go somewhere in the Indian Ocean around later October time, I'm not a huge fan of the Caribbean.

PompomDahlia · 24/02/2021 09:42

I’m also a fan of winter holidays to escape the gloom. Such a mood booster. We are thinking of ttc soon and I’m worried those days may be behind me! DH and I have done:

South Africa - garden route road trip and wine country - absolute heaven and one of my favourites

Australia - Sydney and the Whitsunday Islands, again absolutely stunning

Mauritius - variable weather in Feb due to the tropical rainstorms

US road trip - Vegas, Palm Springs and Grand Canyon. Lots of fun. Not boiling hot but stunning scenery and sunshine

0rch1dF0REST · 24/02/2021 09:46

Bali went island hopping too for a month
Amazing place

0rch1dF0REST · 24/02/2021 09:52

I met some people who had a long term deal on a hotel in Bali for the winter
They were flying off to somewhere else, I think Singapore or Thailand for a couple of weeks
They left their "stuff" in the hotel in Bali & still paid for the hotel in Bali

Ds grown up, dh retired at 55, I’m semi ready and can put my. Isiness on the back burner for a few months of the year so we can do pretty much whatever we fancy now, before we get old and decrepit
SpringisSpinning · 24/02/2021 11:13

Mumble that sounds wonderful Smile

Barbados is sounding good. Barbara some good suggestions I didnt think of Scotland for skiing, we have never been it maybe easier to try it up there.

Just dreaming about being able to escape the hard months of January and Feb and actually have fun somewhere, but we are tied by funds and dc at the moment.
