How long will those on the fence tolerate the ongoing restrictions in our freedoms?

If the daily death toll falls to fewer than 20 a day, which it will do in a couple of weeks on current trends, will people still follow the rules because they’re there, or will people start ignoring them? Or clamouring for early lifting?

I’m not talking about BDs. I’m talking about Joe Public.

justasking111 · 08/03/2021 13:42

I have the asthma clinic annually normally, they weigh, take blood pressure every time, in fact I v find the rare times I have visited GP my BP is always taken, no-one has ever mentioned statins though whereas OH has been since they came out

In Wales we're regularly below 20 a day 0 yesterday deaths, yet we had nearly 5k covid tests yesterday, as if our county testing sites deserted so they're relying on tests in homes hospital now
TabbyStar · 08/03/2021 14:19

Acorn DD works in a GP practice and she called someone the other day to ask him for his blood pressure readings, and he just said, "I don't think I'll bother thank you love, how are you all at the surgery?" And that was that. I'm ignoring my smear test call at the moment. No way as a sexual assault survivor I'm having it done with a mask on. If you don't think it's linked with anything that might be useful to you I don't think they can do much if you just ignore.

Orangeblossom1975 · 08/03/2021 14:27

I'm on some MH meds and they do yearly bloods which are HB1aC and cholesterol, think they might be meant to check weight too but they don't seem to. Mind you I had to ask for the tests to start with. They seem to leave it up to me e.g. to book it etc. Avoiding it too due to eating unhealthily recently and weight gain.

Orangeblossom1975 · 08/03/2021 14:28

Tabbystar have you heard of those smear tests they give you to do at home now. Maybe that might help you.

ISaySteadyOn · 08/03/2021 14:46

@AcornAutumn, Flowers. I would just ignore if it were me.

It must be a year about now that I got the smear test letter. I didn't get through a cycle before lockdown, then masks.

I've survived the osteopath. It's a mauling anway, but I haven't been since October.
I've survived the face covering, but being on the chilly side in my underwear, in a quiet room with only one other person helps and I get to close my eyes or stare at a lampshade to deal with it. Very different to over heating and being in a carcophany of noise in the supermarket or playground and having functional things to think about.
I think it's a sensory overload thing, especially with DS's diagnoses.

Speaking of which, time to head to pick up my precious darlings who might even gave somerthing to talk about other than minecraftpokemonworldwar2... or perhaps not Wink

chocolatesweets · 08/03/2021 15:21

@Worldgonecrazy I wonder too. I think when the shit hits the fan regarding furlough or when the middle classes begin to suffer.

chocolatesweets · 08/03/2021 15:25

I like graveyards too. Reminds me that we're only here for a short time.

AcornAutumn · 08/03/2021 15:41

Thank you for all the replies

I'll ignore it as long as I can but the surgery have me flagged as vulnerable for a range of reasons - touch wood my health is much better now than in my 20s but I don't know how you get unflagged.

Tabby I'm afraid I'm against smear tests generally but just in case you are unaware, you can get a much less invasive HPV test which you can do yourself.

chocolate yes, I find that comforting too. Not something that's acceptable to say now though.

TheOrchidKiller · 08/03/2021 16:54

@BogRollBOGOF
I bet they're itching for a go on minepokemoncraft after a day's hard graft at school!

DS had assembly! That's right, a mass gathering, indoors! He's not impressed, by either the assembly or my envy.

NannyGythaOgg · 08/03/2021 17:02

@AcornAutumn
they may have you flagged as vulnerable, so checking in with you is a good thing, but they don't have you down as incompetent. If you tell them you are fine they have no reason to push it. They will have it on record that you have declined their request - as you are entitled to do.

Thanks

Do you work at a GP?

NannyGythaOgg · 08/03/2021 18:52

No - I used to be a nurse - though that is totally different.

But - I can't see why they would care what you or any single individual weighs. What they do care about is not looking bad.

If they have seen you with weight as part of an issue in the past there will be a flag on your notes, just as there would be (or should be) for many other issues.

If an issue is flagged up and they have ignored it and then it becomes part of a health problem, then they have failed. If they follow it up and you decline then it is no longer their problem.

Obviously I can't guarantee every surgery works the same. Many won't even bother recontacting you but if they do, you have every right to respond that it it not an issue for you. They have no right to override that.

They can invite you for vaccination, smear, breast check or any other health check. They have no right to demand you take up their invitation - unless medication is involved - as in, if I refuse thyroid checks they can stop my thyroid medication.

Happy IWD to you all. Its also DHs birthday. Hes very much an AD too. I have decided that today is the day that i stop comfort eating. And start to try to lose weight. I used my last disposable mask on Friday so have run out of those. DH has a box of disposable ones and i have some reusable ones i havent used yet so have plenty for an emergency. But im not buying any more. Ive noticed a link between mask wearing and comfort eating. Impetigo risk aside (which i posted on a previous thread and i had a blister in late Jan) i just cant breathe very well in them. So for MONTHS because i just wanted to get out of the supermarket i was a. just throwing any food into the trolley and b. buying junk food, chocolate, cheese twists, crisps etc to cheer myself up after struggling in a mask. THATS how ive been coping with lockdowns , restrictions , mask wear and ive gained a massive amount of weight because of it. Today is IWD so i can think of no better day than to try and start to turn this around for MYSELF Not to protect the NHS re, obesity (as ive already seen suggested on here and on Twitter) but for myself. Something like this always has to be done for yourself. Not for a man or the NHS.
Because im worth it. #IWD2021

AcornAutumn · 08/03/2021 19:33

Nanny Thank you.

thefallthroughtheair · 08/03/2021 19:37

Brilliant positivity! Go for it! It's very hard to do stuff like that for others, it has to be from and for you. Good luck!
I'm wondering whether I can be arsed to cut down on the booze but until I'm allowed to spend stupid money on facials, I might as well carry on drinking because the only thing that I worry about is it's bad for ageing skin! £70 on a facial will definitely make me give up at least for a week or two!

MercyBooth · 08/03/2021 19:40

Thanks. I did it before and lost ten stone but i was 29 then. Im 47 now so it will be slower. Its more about being healthier. the weight loss will hopefully be a by product of that

TabbyStar · 08/03/2021 19:42

Yeah I'm a bit ambivalent about them, and if I was a year older I would be on a five-year cycle instead of three years ago I'm not feeling that it's a huge risk being a year late. It would be good if they made the less invasive tests the norm though, I apparently have my cervix in a funny place which causes issues!

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 08/03/2021 20:12

@fallingthroughtheair I really, really need to cut down on the booze. In fact, I am now going dry until the weekend and would like to save drinking for weekends only. Previous attempts at this have not been at all successful. There are so few other joys to be had at the moment. I really do need to sort it out though, I know I do.

110APiccadilly · 08/03/2021 20:25

I don't go for smear tests. I'm so low risk that when I saw a GP about something related she told me she wouldn't advise me doing the test. I've been asked about it since then but I've always felt it's just because I'm flagged in the system, not because there's a need for me to do it.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 08/03/2021 20:36

My last smear did the HPV screen and it was negative. It said I still needed to keep up regular screening but surely that means that as long as I (or DH BlushShock) don't have a new partner the likelihood of me having it is very low?

In theory, yes, thought it's one that can lie dormant.

I'm working on the same assumption. I did my own HPV screen last year. I don't think I'll bother with any more.

The last time I had a smear (and I'm not sure if it was a smear our just an std check) apart from that would have been about 18 years ago in my early/mid 20s.

thenightsky · 08/03/2021 21:11

When do they stop calling you for smears? I've just realised it feels like ages since I had one. But I'm old - 61.
