Anyone know County Durham? Specifically Stanley?

Relocating to the north east. Spotted a house in Stanley. Is this an area to avoid? Is it ok?
No need to commute, schools for primary and high children. Not bothered about weather as know it’s high up..
Should we view? It’s a three hour drive so wanted to check out the area first.

TIA

I'm in Sunderland (obviously) haha and tho I love it here as lived here all my life if I was to move to other places in North East I like Whitburn/Cleadon tynemouth certain areas of shields Hexham

I have lived in numerous locations within the County Durham area and TBH wouldn’t choose to live there again. There are lots of really nice places but they are often surrounded by pretty deprived areas and have limited facilities. Chester le street has some lovely areas and has a great riverside park but the town centre is pretty much run down, which is a shame as it used to be such a thriving busy shopping centre.
North of the Tyne or Northumberland would be my choice. Places like morpeth, tynemouth, Whitley bay, monkseaton cullercoats , have properties within your price range.
I would avoid the west end of Newcastle as well.

If you want countryside and don't need to commute I'd go for Northumberland over County Durham.

What about Hexham?

I’m curious - why did you choose the NE?

Chipsahoy · 24/02/2021 12:21

Thanks all.

North east because it’s beautiful. We have holidayed there a lot. We like north yorks too but love Newcastle and Durham cities.

We like wales a lot but don’t want to disrupt my kids education too much.
Scotland is slightly too far.
West rains a lot!

South is pricey.

So north east and north yorks are what we narrowed it down to.

Hexham is on the list and Morpeth. We adore both. Not finding much for sale that we like though!

If you’re contemplating North Yorkshire, how about Northallerton? Fab town centre/high street and on the east coast mainline.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/02/2021 13:17

The schools are very good in Hexham.

Ijustlikedthename · 24/02/2021 19:49

Blaydon has some good parts but I would avoid! Crawcrook is better but I would go a bit further east or North

Resurrecting zombie thread to ask OP @Chipsahoy where you ended up? Planning a similar move in a couple of years, but with a smaller budget and need 4 bedrooms and a garage, so won't be looking at the nicest areas that are mentioned here, but still found this thread really helpful.

I’ve lived and worked all over County Durham and Stanley is one of the only places I felt a bit unsafe so I probably wouldn’t choose it. On the plus side, there are so many lovely places to live in County Durham. Chester-le-Street has a wonderful riverside park and is great for commuting to Newcastle, Sunderland or Durham. Some of the villages surrounding Consett are lovely and picturesque. Seaham has the coast.

If schools are a consideration Durham Johnston which serves the city is an outstanding school.

Sorry, just saw this is an old thread!

You can get a really decent 3 bed in a nice area still up there. The link is for mostly north of the Tyne ie Newcastle. I’d say Ponteland, Chapel park, Gosforth are all decent.
