Anyone know County Durham? Specifically Stanley?

Relocating to the north east. Spotted a house in Stanley. Is this an area to avoid? Is it ok?
No need to commute, schools for primary and high children. Not bothered about weather as know it’s high up..
Should we view? It’s a three hour drive so wanted to check out the area first.

TIA

Please no to Stanley. Newcastle is great, Gosforth/Heaton. But further out to Woolsington.

Or look to Northumberland but still close to the city- Heddon?

[quote merryhouse]what about this one?

this says extensive garden though the photos aren't helpful - shadforth is lovely and its children attend durham city secondary schools

similarly, no info on the garden (though we had friends in church villas with a sizeable plot)

omg one of the sherburn house properties is for sale (NOT to be confused with sherburn or sherburn hill Grin)

Shadforth is a very nice village, no primary school in the village though. That Sherburn Hospital house is lovely. I always look at them enviously when I drive past.

This one's on my 60s estate two miles from the city centre. People move out if they want to get their children into Durham Johnston

This one appears to have a bar in the back garden Grin

North Lodge near Chester le Street is lovely. Some stunning houses near Park View school.

Brigante9 · 21/02/2021 14:40

That house on the Parade in Chester-leStreet is lush! As is the Sherburn house, very low maintenance paved garden, maybe not great for kids playing, tho? No mud, however!

Chipsahoy · 21/02/2021 14:48

These are the two houses we like. Very different. The one linked above

Just down the road from me (same caveat applies)

One for the romantics, I think - it says it's "a large plot" but appears to be mostly ivy and lily pond...

Possibly not if your husband doesn't want to have work done:

@merryhouse omg that sheburn one is amazing!

damn, sorry, the one with the bar I haven't put the right link in (keep pressing Ctrl-V rather than Ctrl-C)

merryhouse · 21/02/2021 14:57

Lovely, isn't it? It's a small group of properties opposite what is now a nursing home that we drive past to get to Shincliffe. Ostensibly walkable to the old village centre and even possibly to (the school on) the High Shincliffe estate, though at least one of my children would have balked at that idea.

You would find yourself living next to a graveyard though...

This looks nice.

Chipsahoy · 21/02/2021 15:12

Downside is that they rent a garden in that sherburn one. So that would be risky if the owners decide not to allow that any longer.

I don’t know the area at all, we are in the midlands, so I really appreciate the advice and the links. I didn’t realise Stanley was a terrible area. I did google and I searched past posts but while I found things about avoiding crook for example, nothing about Stanley.

OP posts:
Directionerforever · 21/02/2021 15:16

Ok that Delaval one is in an ok area, not the best but not the worst either. It could be a fabulous house without too much work. It will be reasonably close to the new train station which has just got the go ahead which will give links straight to Newcastle and into the metro system giving you great public transport options. Have a look at Holywell village (next to seaton Delaval) and Seaton Sluice. What exactly are your non-negotiable. My husband says I have an obsession with the local property market 😂

PickAChew · 21/02/2021 15:20

That's a great house but, as pp have mentioned, part of Stanley are very deprived and you really have to know the area well to buy a house there. The town centre is absolutely dire. And, yes, when it snows, it snows!

Chipsahoy · 21/02/2021 15:29

@Directionerforever thanks for the info. I love the house and it’s near to everything.

I really want a ds toilet. I’d like a utility but can live without. No tiny garden. It doesn’t have to be massive but room to swing a cat at least Grin

OP posts:
Directionerforever · 21/02/2021 15:41

How many bedrooms?

Directionerforever · 21/02/2021 15:41

Does it have to be detached?

Chipsahoy · 21/02/2021 15:47

No doesn’t have to be detached. Love my current semi! Three beds plus.

LunarCatAndDaffodils · 21/02/2021 16:05

There’s a big difference between Stanley and East Stanley IIRC. Not entirely sure which way round but someone I used to work with always used to stress she was form EAST Stanley, so probably that one is “better”.

MrsEWeatherwax · 21/02/2021 16:23

East Stanley is definitely better. I have family who live in an estate on East Stanley and it’s a lovely estate.

PickAChew · 21/02/2021 17:45

Not too tiny garden www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/78056436#/

That other pity me house, with the pond, is somewhat overpriced, IMO.

Chipsahoy · 21/02/2021 19:01

@PickAChew
That’s huge. What’s wrong with it? Seems cheap for detached and garage and all those rooms and gardens on three sides?

OP posts:
NoMackerelInSwindon · 21/02/2021 19:05

When I read County Durham and Stanley in the title I immediate thought that perhaps the Johnson family and the Cummings family were looking to resettle as an extended family somewhere there.

It's wide but not very deep - notice how tiny the rooms are. It's a nice little row of houses, though. I think they're ex-police houses. One of the owners lovingly tends to her own garden and the grassed area between the side road the houses are on and the (fairly quiet) main road.
