Anyone know County Durham? Specifically Stanley?

Relocating to the north east. Spotted a house in Stanley. Is this an area to avoid? Is it ok?
No need to commute, schools for primary and high children. Not bothered about weather as know it’s high up..
Should we view? It’s a three hour drive so wanted to check out the area first.

TIA

I grew up in Ch-le-st, £350k will get you something much nicer than Stanley. It’s awful:

Consett is a nicer area than Stanley with beautiful surrounding countryside, it’s 7 miles away from Stanley but great links to Newcastle & Durham. Areas to keep away from though are Delves Lane/The Grove/Moorside/Leadgate/Bridgehill

What about Wilton Gilbert? Or Sacriston especially top of Findon Hill.
The problem is lots of areas have deprived areas but two minutes up the road are lovely.
New estates at Newfields look nice. Low crime too, if you check crime figures. Definitely keep looking Chester le Street for that budget. Schools are excellent and Arnison Centre not far and A1 for Newcastle and coast.

Nicer places in Consett or Shotley Bridge.

It's a real mixed bag though around country Durham with deprivation and nice sitting alongside each other.

Have a look at schools and local crime rates, wellbeing index etc.

Have you considered places like Wolsingham?

Consett? Lievers Close, Consett, DH8

I was brought up there and can say with certainty it's a dreary shit hole. I cannot think of one good thing to say about it. I would take a house with a small garden in Lanchester over a mansion in Stanley any day of the week.

As advised above, look at Durham City and environs.

Gilead · 21/02/2021 13:54

Stanley is a touch grim!

IggyAce · 21/02/2021 13:56

Eaglescliffe and Yarm are nice in the tees valley, good transport links, easy access to both coast & country. You would get a lot for your budget.

That Consett house is in Shotley, the Derwent Walk is on your doorstep. It’s a nice spot, excellent doctor and dentist nearby. Lovely views. I live near there!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 21/02/2021 13:57

Yes that Lievers Close one is a nice area.

InternationalRelationist · 21/02/2021 13:58

Consett and Sacriston are also dumps. Shotley Bridge is nice. Hexham is nicer. Some lovely villages in Weardale and Northumberland.

Honestly, that corner of NW Durham is very deprived and riddled with unemployment, crime and drugs in my opinion. There's very little for kids to do so underage drinking and drug taking are common.

Well I wouldn't go quite that far!

brittanyfairies · 21/02/2021 14:00

You can buy my house in Cockfield. Only 20 minutes from Barnard Castle so you know your eyesight will always be okGrin

Yes Shotley bridge is the nicest area within Consett

Hateyou · 21/02/2021 14:10

What’s in Lanchester/Wolsingham/Consett for teenagers? Hexham is in middle of nowhere. You will have to drive everywhere cinema/theatre. What about out skirts of Durham city.
Walks are overrated.

Chipsahoy · 21/02/2021 14:10

@IggyAce that’s lovely! Thank you

Stanley form County Durham? I know a Stanley but might not be the same one

Directionerforever · 21/02/2021 14:12

Which one in seaton Delaval? I know the area very well. Far better bet than Stanley.

Chipsahoy · 21/02/2021 14:13

We drive everywhere for that stuff now. So not bothered about being nowhere near things.

Nobeautysleep · 21/02/2021 14:14

There’s absolutely no way I’d live in Stanley. It’s high up. Far from everywhere, snows even in May and the schools are awful.

Look at coxhoe/shincliffe/Newton hall which are all closer to Durham. Or Cullercoats/Whitley Bay Area near the coast.

merryhouse · 21/02/2021 14:17

what about this one?
www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/81841501#/

this says extensive garden though the photos aren't helpful - shadforth is lovely and its children attend durham city secondary schools

similarly, no info on the garden (though we had friends in church villas with a sizeable plot)

omg one of the sherburn house properties is for sale (NOT to be confused with sherburn or sherburn hill Grin)

Buttercupcup · 21/02/2021 14:21

@merryhouse I was just about to share that double fronted house on the parade in Chester-le-street love it! Loads of potential!

Brigante9 · 21/02/2021 14:29

You can afford a decent area of Newcastle with that amount. Why on earth would you choose Stanley? Have you looked at anywhere in Newcastle? Eg Fenham? Very good single sex schools nearby. My mum lives there, has a huge 3 bed semi, 100ft long garden. I doubt her house is worth more than £300K. The drive to the beach is 20 minutes.

I’d say beach properties are possibly out of range, but I haven’t lived there for a long time, I may be totally out of touch with the big Tynemouth properties.
