What do they use it for?

We always planned to get DD a phone for Y6 when she will start going to school by herself. She's very excited but we don't plan on letting her have any social media accounts until she meets the required age.

If your dc has a phone but is too young for social media, what do they use it for? Other than making phonecalls obviously!

Calls, texts and WhatsApp, making videos, a couple of games.

Sally872 · 21/02/2021 08:11

WhatsApp, watching tiktok, video calls with friends. Most useful for me is when she is out playing I can call her when dinner is ready etc.

SillyOldMummy · 21/02/2021 08:15

Skype calls to friends, watching Netflix and streamed tv on wifi, taking photos, watching YouTube videos, Buzzfeed quizzes etc.

No social media or WhatsApp .

I put Life 360 on it so I can see where the kids are ( also means they can see where you are so no sneaking off for a quick coffee and being able to get away with it🤣🤣)
It was mainly for them to take to school and text when they got there and text when they got in the house after school on the few days I couldn’t do it. They are both now older and use there phones for everything ( we still have life 360 !!) it’s handy for ds1 who’s 17 and says he’ll text when he gets to his friends house/ shops etc. I also know when he’s leaving work!!!

Games, FaceTime, the odd message. Never made a call from it! They just got a phone in February for their 10th birthday

Phone calls and texts. Camera and videos. We relented so she could talk to her friends in lockdown. No web browser - she is allowed the internet but on our computer which we can monitor. We’ll gradually relax that.

No social media or what’s app.

MrBeagles · 21/02/2021 08:25

WhatsApp messages with us, friends and family.

He uses the camera too.

The internet is switched on when he's out playing and we have life 360 app that allows us to see where he is.

Mine have a few family group chats on WhatsApp. One with me and my partner, one dad and his partner, grandparents, friends, they use it for pokemon go out on walks and music, mine are 7 & 8 and iv found chatting on WhatsApp has helped them with reading and spelling as it's all practice that doesn't feel like 'learning'

LittleRa · 21/02/2021 08:29

Spotify (there’s a kids app version of it so the lyrics are all clean/radio edits).

Oh I forgot to say Amazon music too.
