God, I love all these bands.

Orange Juice are perhaps my favourite, we've got everything they ever did on vinyl. You Can't Hide Your Love Away is a masterpiece. Love Edwyn, saw him at a gig a few years ago, he's so brave.

Jesse honey is it hard to take
Does it feel so bad to be 28 you were 23
And you could do anything now you open your mouth
And spit the gutter out

Grace from Rattlesnakes album. I remember thinking god yeh imagine being 28!
Readers I’m 52 this year. Where did that time go!!

MechantGourmet · 20/02/2021 23:43

I love Killermont Street from that album.
I think Oblivious was my favourite single of theirs.

I love Prefab Sprout and Lloyd Cole too...and Scritti Politti!

Maladicta · 20/02/2021 23:43

And we wait on every whisper
Like it makes us more alive
There's a sense we didn't have
And I feel it in the other five

Ifyourefeelingsinister · 20/02/2021 23:48

Love Roddy Frame - used to live in Glasgow and always sung Killermont Street in my head every time I got the bus to Killermont Street bus station - always made it seem strangely romantic!

Suddenly the heavens rolled
Suddenly the rain came down
Suddenly was washed away
The Mary that I knew
So when you find somebody who gives
Think of me and celebrate
I made such a big mistake when I was Mary's Prayer

AStarAboveTheCity · 20/02/2021 23:55

I'm from Motherwell. Motherwell is a shithole. Not because of people from Motherwell but it is.

Seeing guy like this looking like movie stars when I knew they were from just down the road. Just down the road from industry that was literally destroyed, I mean watching the towers of the steelworks collapse, I can't tell you what that meant, back in the day.

Aztec Camera were the first band I saw after getting contact lenses, which were my “reward” for passing my Highers. I couldn’t believe the difference!

Danny Wilson I missed completely because my then boyfriend was on pain of death to be on the last bus home, and they were yet to come on by the time we had to leave.

Moonmelodies · 20/02/2021 23:58

High Land, Hard Rain was/is a fantastic LP, such good songwriting. Another great band of the early 80s, again similar to Orange Juice, was the Pale Fountains.

Mumblechum0 · 21/02/2021 00:02

Why must you tell me all your secrets
When it’s hard enough to love you knowing nothing
We’re living 4 flights up but I swear
It feels like underground

Mumblechum0 · 21/02/2021 00:04

Spent my youth in the Lake District, always on boats.

Riverboat Party was the soundtrack to the summer of 1985

zen1 · 21/02/2021 00:06

I would go back in a heartbeat. Can’t believe “the eighties” is more than thirty years ago.

BikeRunSki · 21/02/2021 00:09

First 7” single I ever bought!

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2021 00:13

Another one, but a bit more mainstream was Deacon Blue. I thought they were brilliant.

YouLando · 21/02/2021 00:18

'Oblivious' is an absolute classic, I've also just added it to my Spotify!

My first gig was Deacon Blue in October 1988, at Leeds University Refectory - I am old! They were fab.

Chocolate Girl was my favourite. Those were the days eh?
Zhx3 · 21/02/2021 00:20

I have found my people Grin.

I still listen to "Love", it's such a great album. Also adored "On the Avenue" from Frestonia.

tothesea · 21/02/2021 00:22

Her heart, heart's like crazy paving
Upside down and back to front
She says ooh, it's so hard to love
When love was your great disappointment

YouLando · 21/02/2021 00:24

They absolutely were the days. How am I 50?? I remember listening to that Deacon Blue album over and over at the beginning of University.

StormyInTheNorth · 21/02/2021 00:24

Banger that has never left my playlist.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 21/02/2021 01:08

Was Working In A Goldmine on that album? One of my faves.

anomletteandaglassofwine · 21/02/2021 01:26

Have you all watched the Top of The Pops reviews of the year on YouTube? The 80s ones are fantastic, I've been watching them with 16yo dd, absolutely brilliant nostalgia. Lloyd Cole was my favourite, black polo neck and floppy hair, swoon.

What amazes me is that I can remember the lyrics to songs from 35 years ago, even ones I didn't particularly like, but I can't remember what we had for dinner yesterday.

Yes I’m the same. I can sing Wham Rap word perfect but no idea where I put my car keys.
poptartqueen · 21/02/2021 01:36

Aztec camera...brilliant group.

tothesea · 21/02/2021 01:39

Ha Sparklingbrook I can sing Young Guns word perfect. It’s a important skill!
