HELP - speeding ticket - will I be done for fraud?

TramaDollface · 20/02/2021 13:51

I received a NIP for speeding in the autumn
Accepted responsibility,
Filled it all out
Paid it

I then had to send my license back to have my points added

To my horror: the license information I’ve given them is wrong: I had my license reissued when I lost it a few years and I never noticed that the identifying number has been changed to my married name

Filled it all out from memory - honest mistake

What do I do and how serious is this?
Please help. This has kept me awake all night and there’s a letter on the doormat that I can’t bring myself to open...

You can view your licence online. Check if it is on there. You can only have one licence.

Open the letter?

You are not denying it is you. You are not trying to have someone else take the punishment.

Open the letter.

Open the letter

purplecorkheart · 20/02/2021 14:59

I would assume that the numbers are linked and that they can see that an apply it to the right number. Open the letter and if it says it has been applied to the wrong number and advises them of what you have told us. Mistakes do happen but once you have a paper trail showing them you tried to fix the problem you should be fine

carriemathisonshandbag · 20/02/2021 15:06

I did this last year. I forgot to change my vehicle ownership from my married name when I got divorced. I filled out the speeding ticket form in my new name. All they did was email me to check which name was right. No issue at all. It will happen all the time.

doistayordoigo · 20/02/2021 15:20

They will either need you to fill out a new NIP with the actual licence details, or need you to change your licence to match, whichever is most correct.

Ch3rish · 20/02/2021 15:25

I don't know what you mean by the number has changed to your name but how do you know that the letter isn't them sending you your licence back?

Mixing up your name is hardly fraud, why would you jump straight to the worst scenario?

mrsbyers · 20/02/2021 16:05

My driving licence is in maiden name and I completed my speed awareness etc using married - nothing happened at all , it’s not a legal requirement to change name on any document

Floralnomad · 20/02/2021 16:07

Just open the letter and stop being such a drama llama

ElderMillennial · 20/02/2021 16:09

You read the letter and if it seems like there is an error you tell them. That's it.

TramaDollface · 20/02/2021 16:11

Sorry to clarify i gave them incorrect license number

And paid etc

You'll be fine. I've been stopped by police with old address and they know people genuinely forget to update these things. The authorities have laws so they can catch actual criminals who are intending to deceive - don't worry! :)

Sorry to clarify i gave them incorrect license number

Do you mean the license of the car or the number from your driving license? I don’t know that I would know the number of my license from memory.
SplendidSuns1000 · 20/02/2021 16:32

It'll be fine you can contact them, explain the issue and it will be dealt with. If you speak to them first they'll see you're not hiding anything and an issue like that is a common mistake. Sort it out asap when you get home so you can put your mind at ease.

ElderMillennial · 20/02/2021 19:24

You said "there’s a letter on the doormat that I can’t bring myself to open" which is why people are saying open it. Not being able to open it because you're at work is by the by.

If it's an honest mistake you can rectify it.
