What's happened to velcro?

DS needs new shoes so have been looking online, but everywhere seems to have a new fancy pants word for velcro. Riptape, touch and close, hook and loop fastening etc., what happened to good old velcro? Is this the footwear version of lunchtime supervisors? Confused

I guess it is like hoover - a brand name for something more generic.
Makes it hard when searching though!

Yes, it's a brand name.

Velcro is trademark and it's a superior quality product compared to touch and close etc. These other inferior products can't call it velcro.

This is a recent thing though, it always used to be universally called velcro, was there some kind of legal thing I wonder?

Not recent in retailing terms - no company can legally call their product velcro unless it is produced by the Velcro company.

We all say velcro, jacuzzi and hoover in everyday speech, but no company other than those that own the brand can use those specific words.

Just fallen down a Google rabbit hole and apparently velcro the company started a campaign to stop people saying velcro in 2017, who knew!
