Moral Question

At Christmas I bought a Ring device, in early jan I had a new router, the Ring device just would not connect to the new wifi (every other device has) i rang Ring and after doing a few tests with a very friendly American guy he said they would just send a replacement and to return the existing ring. Will take 7-14 days. I thought this was slow considering they are owned by Amazon and you get order one the next day from Amazon but so be it.
7 weeks (and 3 phone calls to Ring later) the new device finally came yesterday, I’ve just had a second delivered
It feels like stealing to keep it but it was such a palaver to get the replacement yesterday I now don’t want another palaver returning the second device
(To return the faulty one I had to ask a friend to print the label they sent (I’m wfh and no printer) and I also have to go into town either via taxi or bus to go to a DPD drop off point, I’ve not left the village since before the first lockdown so annoyed I have to venture and put my family at risk to return it rather than go the post office so to potentially have to go again to return device 2 and get a label printed is annoying me)

Would you keep or return device 2?

The duplicate device needs returning.

No moral ambiguity there.

Thanks @topcat2014 this was my plan but reading similar threads on here in the past so many people give the impression they would keep things, it would play on my mind if I kept it, just annoyed it’s not easy to return for me
I’m interested in opinions, not sure how to do a poll on here either!

You certainly should return it but there should be no urgency or risk to you when you do so. It can wait a couple of months given how long it took for then to sort it, by which time it might well be easier for you to sort out the return, or you might need to make a trip for another reason and could sort out the return at the same time.

Device 2 was sent to you in error? Then you make it available for them to come and collect it. If you did not ask for it, it is not up to you to jump through any hoops to return it. But let them know you have it and that they can pick it up.

I would just return it when it is convenient for you to do so instead of taking a special trip to do it.

So someone went though a palaver to send you a replacement(not you physically, you just phoned and waited), but you don't want to go through the physical work of returning?
People who keep it would do it without thinking. They won't feel guilty.

And I agree ask them to come to collect if they can, or do it after the lockdown and when convenient for you.

I’m happy to return a faulty item @Xerochrysum but due to the current restrictions I’m not comfortable in venturing far from home. Sadly I cannot go to my local post office to return it I will have to use public transport and go to a supermarket to use a drop off point. I’ve not been in a supermarket for over a year due to restrictions

I will be calling them today and sourcing another label to return it

Get them to post the label to you (so you don't have to get a friend to do it) . Or arrange for a courier who will bring the label when they come and collect it.
