Would you be a celebrity if you had the choice?

It used to be that celebs were adored and looked up to. These days they seem to be punchbags and have their entire life scrutinised. So, if you had the choice to star in the next blockbuster/ become an influencer etc- would you do it?

Christ no. Especially not those examples - movie acting and 'influencing' both especially boring and miserable.

I hate feeling exposed, like my privacy and am easily influenced by others' views of me. Of course I would love to have an amazing talent I got to pursue full time but the celeb bit is horrific.

FuckyouBrennan · 20/02/2021 07:24

Absolutely not. I can’t think of anything worse.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 20/02/2021 07:27

No. I always feel weird at the thought of actors. Do they not feel like twats? Being paid so much money to pretend they are something amazing and then someone says 'cut'. Or indulging themselves in an 'emotional scene' and then being treated like they farted diamonds after. It's just weird.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 20/02/2021 07:31

Also celebs are public property, but even worse than politicians or similar, everything about them is fair game. I don't want to ever be public property.

PinkyParrot · 20/02/2021 07:32

I don't think many get worse treatment than black, female politicians.

Bainne · 20/02/2021 07:34

There’s a huge difference between being famous for doing something difficult extremely well, and your success at it allowing you to do more of it, and being famous because you post photos of your abs or cleaning techniques on Instagram. I mean, I could imagine wanting to be Fiona Shaw or Simon Russell Beale or Tilda Swindon, but not an ‘influencer’.

Slumberdoon · 20/02/2021 07:36

I hadn’t thought of politician but now you mention it it has the dubious honour of combining fame with having to make unpopular decisions and being blamed for anything that goes wrong. I agree that Diane Abbot in particular has received appalling abuse.

It didn't even appeal to me as a teenager as I knew I'd hate to be under that kind of scrutiny

Moonface123 · 20/02/2021 09:36

It's all so shallow and fake, so definitely not for me.

Keha · 20/02/2021 09:46

It depends on why I would be a celebrity. If it was because I was a very talented author or sports person -well I wouldn't mind having a talent/skill like that and being successful at it. I'd also be happy to be a local/regional celebrity, where you might get a few opportunities come your way but could go on holiday and not be recognised (I'm thinking like the weatherman off the local news). I wouldnt want to be mega famous, or an influencer.

BearSoFair · 20/02/2021 10:03

No. I don't like it when people I've known for 10 years spot me in the street and want to chat, I couldn't bare it from strangers as well!

Dee1975 · 20/02/2021 10:13

No. Wouldn’t want to be famous. If I had to choose between actor and influencer than it would be an actor. At least I would be famous for actually doing a job. I don’t get the whole influencer thing.
I’d love to be rich though! Just not famous :-)

WonkyCactus · 20/02/2021 10:17

God no! Although when I was a kid I did want to be a news reader! Grin

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 20/02/2021 10:22

Nope, I have a family member who was / is on soaps and done various TV shows. They were involved in a bit of a extramarital affair scandal and my 90 year old grandparents ended up with lots of press and paparazzi outside their house. My family member didn't even live there so I still have no idea how they found out the address but it was very intimidating. No way I'd want that as part of my everyday life.

VienneseWhirligig · 20/02/2021 10:30

Christ no. I worked at No 10 and you got papped on your way in and out every day (just in case you were anyone important or were carrying papers carelessly that could be printed in a rag), I always felt like I had to look smart and confident going in through the front door just in case they used a pic of me as a stock photo or I was in the background of someone else who was the target of the photo. I hated it so can't imagine being the actual.subject, followed and photographed all the time.

AubergineDream · 20/02/2021 10:51

I'd hate to be famous but I would be a bit famous if it meant being successful in my career or in my hobby, because both are passions of mine. I wouldn't do it for the sake of doing it ever, no.

1and2 · 20/02/2021 11:03

God, no. I've done some things in the past, pretty normal and harmless, but I don't want it being used against me or my family.

And it's a fact that journalists don't let he truth get in the way of a good story Grin.
