Metronidazole...when can I have alcohol?

Not a massive drinker but it's been a stressful day at work and I fancy a G&T.
Had my last tablet of a five day metronizadole course yesterday at 8 am.
Am I ok to have a drink now or is it still likely to make me sick?

You should be ok

Gogglebox20 · 18/02/2021 21:13

You should be fine now, it’s only while you are taking them I believe. If unsure though, wait another day.

mummymayhem18 · 18/02/2021 21:14

They say wait 2-3 days after having that one as it is particularly nasty and will make you very 🤮

The bnf advises 48 hours after finishing a course before drinking alcohol (sorry!)

I've literally just googled this Grin How bloody weird!

I took my last one at 9am this morning and am planning on sinking a bottle of red tomorrow night Blush

NHS guidelines say you need to wait 2 days. It’s a horrendous antibiotic for side effects but works incredibly well when needed. Hope you are feeling better. Sorry I’m not the bearer of better news.

I once used mouthwash with alcohol in it whilst taking metronidazole.

I didn’t stop vomiting for 24hrs afterwards ☹️

RandomPatternedTiles · 18/02/2021 21:20

Please be so so so so so so careful! It's a drug used for alcoholics so that they vomit if they drink any alcohol at all. I'd leave it a good few days to get it out your system (or you may not have a choice, bleurgh

NotYourHolidayDick · 18/02/2021 21:24

Really?!

I've been using Chlorhexidine mouthwash too. Oops 😬

Haha, great minds! It's been a long week (and it's only Thursday)

Bugger. Oh well, will wait until tomorrow. Cup of tea it is then. Thanks all

Definitely leave it 48 hours, it has a fairly long half life and is very very nasty to have in your system with even the smallest amount of alcohol.

I know from bitter experience!!
