I'm trying to remember a book from my childhood to buy for DD. It was given to my by my teacher when I left her school at the age of 9. I was fairly bright / a good reader so it's probably age appropriate for something like 8-12??
All I remember is the main character is a girl who gets kidnapped or somehow imprisoned by a monster of some sort. I think the monster was called a Djinn, or possibly the Djinn was another character.
There might be some kind of mini monster type thing who looks after the girl, notably offering her any food she likes. She requests piles of ice cream and things like that, then scoffs them all, then finds that because there were imaginary food and not the real deal she doesn't feel satisfied by them.
There were all sorts of escapes and adventures, but this is about all I remember. It was a thick book, over an inch.
Can anyone help? I'm 40, so this was available for sale 30+ years ago.
