Why do some drivers have this?

I have noticed this for a while now and after googling I can’t find any answers, so I’m sure someone on mumsnet will know Grin.

Why do some drivers put a mirror facing outward in front of their steering wheel?!

I notice it on prob about 1 in 30 cars so it is obviously a ‘thing’ but I cannot think what this thing is!

Facing out of the car or extra rear view to see the kids?

sparklefarts · 18/02/2021 11:21

Eh? I have never seen this. Surely it reflects light and is dangerous?

FuckyouCovid21 · 18/02/2021 11:24

I can't even picture this Confused

billyt · 18/02/2021 11:36

Not sure of this is what Lazierdays means, but the only time I've seen mirrors which are not facing to the rear, as usual, is where they are pointing down in front of the vehicle. This helps the driver to 'see' how close they ar etc something when parking. On larger vehicles they are normally used to make sure no-one /nothing is in front before moving/maneuvering.

Lazierdays · 18/02/2021 11:47

I knew this would be bonkers when I couldn’t find anything on google!! Honestly it is so weird. Next time you go for a drive look out for it!
It is a mirror in front of the steering wheel, facing outward with the reflective surface towards the windscreen. It is surprisingly common and I can’t find anything out about it or why they do it! Maybe it is a secret club Grin.

What area of the country do you live in op? Is it just your area you have seen this? I have never seen anything like you are describing!!!

TheHauntedFishtank · 18/02/2021 11:50

Is it a dashcam?

megapack · 18/02/2021 11:52

Wouldn't that be dangerous?!

KittensTeaAndCake · 18/02/2021 11:52

How strange, I've never noticed this.
How big are the mirrors? So they face outwards towards the front or are they angled up or down? Are they near the window or further back on the dashboard?
So many questions.....

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 18/02/2021 11:52

Are you mistaking dash and for mirrors?

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 18/02/2021 11:52

Dashcams - thank you autocorrect

KittensTeaAndCake · 18/02/2021 11:53

My dashcam looks like a camera though, not a mirror.

LubaLuca · 18/02/2021 11:56

Is it a head-up display that you're mistaking for a reflective surface?

Theo1756 · 18/02/2021 11:57

Sounds like the heads up display that some cars have. In some cars it’s a small glass panel that displays speed, directions etc.

Lazierdays · 18/02/2021 11:57

No, not a dashcam, definitely a mirror. Have seen it in lorries too. I thought they could be dangerous. They are usually rectangular, sometimes square. Placed in the front windscreen in front of the steering wheel. Just asked my DF he said could be to try and avoid speed cameras as he remembers something about cds being used for the same years ago, but didn’t seem too sure!
Once you notice them you will keep seeing them now!
glad I name changed Grin

Blondeissimo · 18/02/2021 11:57

It's the heads up display, I think. My car has one that can look reflective from the outside if the sun hits it in a certain way.

Catterpillar · 18/02/2021 11:58

1 in 30 cars have them but nobody else has ever seen them Hmm

Lazierdays · 18/02/2021 11:59

Yes I just made it up because it sounds so funny and witty Confused.

1 in 30 cars have it but you can't find a google image or take a pic of a car?

extentioncord · 18/02/2021 12:01

Just asked my DF he said could be to try and avoid speed cameras

How would this work?

SnarkyBag · 18/02/2021 12:02

I agree it’s probably the head up display. I have one an i think it does look quite reflective from the outside

Fckingfuming · 18/02/2021 12:03

Could it be a HUD?(heads up display for Speedo/ sat nav/ phone link) This would be mounted facing out from behind the steering wheel.

Fckingfuming · 18/02/2021 12:04

It projects the image to or the driver onto the inside of the screen, like a projector.

Fckingfuming · 18/02/2021 12:04

*for the driver

MagicSummer · 18/02/2021 12:10

My husband has one of these - like a small mirror in front of the steering wheel on the dashboard, facing outwards. It projects your speed and other info onto the windscreen so you can see it without looking down - it's quite useful.
