Really stuck for birthday present for 11-year-old DD - any ideas?

Birthday in 6 days so I've left it very late but just can't think what to get her. She's very active and outdoorsy - loves cycling, skateboarding etc - and in normal circumstances, I'd go for an activity-based present e.g. Go Ape or Climbing lessons but obviously those are out at the moment. She's also quite techy and would prob enjoy a coding course but that would be online and I feel she's had more than enough screentime of late.

Don't want to get her 'stuff' for the sake of it. I could just get her clothes because she's growing like a weed but I wanted to think of something fun because there hasn't been much of that of late!

Any ideas much appreciated.

Does she like hiking and climbing? Walking boots and a promise to climb, scramble all the hills near you. Or a wet suit to do some wild swimming?

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 16/02/2021 13:41

Go Pro camera or similar?

Laaaaa · 16/02/2021 13:41

Or a canoe to canoe near you. I got my 13 year old an inflatable kayak a few years ago and it's been worth it weight in gold. Used hundreds of times on the canal near us by us all

Money? Shes old enough to know that restrictions seem to be lifting soon so she could use that to save, spend on stuff, or do activities?

Maybe a coding club will open up soon -you could get her some kit to do with, depending on her current skill level?

Clothes
Accessories for hobbies
A go pro is a great idea and non branded ones can be cheaper but just as good
Does she have a phone or iPad? iTunes card to top up.
Sweets
Smellies
Does she have a normal skateboard? She might like a Penny board? New wheels etc?

deathbyprocrastination · 16/02/2021 13:46

Thanks v much for the ideas, folks. She does like hiking/swimming/kayaking etc but we're in London and the proper easing of lockdown still feels a way off so I'm not sure outdoors equipment would be much fun to open given that it'll be a long time before she's able to use it.

I like the Go Pro idea!

No smart phone yet.

She got a skateboard upgrade at xmas

Yikes, should have googled 'go pro camera' for price first!!

So the real 'go pro camera' seems to be over £200 but there are as someone said up thread a bunch of much much cheaper non-branded ones

A lifesaver for us during all the lockdowns has been ds (age 12) trampoline and his LoLo ball. He bounces for hours on both! Has she got either of those? Or a basketball hoop?

deathbyprocrastination · 16/02/2021 13:54

A basket ball hoop or trampoline would be amazing but we've only got a tiny garden and i'm not sure where it would go.

Oh and does she have a Fitbit? That was ds favourite Xmas present.

NotWithMyShoes · 16/02/2021 13:58

Decathlon do an electronic darts board. Or an archery kit?

JaninaDuszejko · 16/02/2021 13:58

Basketball hoop doesn't need much space. We have one on the side of our house and the kids play on the driveway. Good for outdoor exercise socialising as well.

reefedsail · 16/02/2021 13:59

If it has to be fun on her actual birthday you are a bit limited this year!

Maybe a cheap brand go-pro and a drone so she could learn to make and edit drone videos? Caveat- I know nothing about restrictions on drones etc.

Telescope?

My 10.5yo DS is all about the watersports and would love a paddleboard/ surfboard/ kayak etc but they are all £££(£) and you need transport for them etc.

Ilovemaisie · 16/02/2021 14:02

Have you asked her? What does she like that's not sporty/outdoors? Reading, crafts ?

TheSpottedZebra · 16/02/2021 14:03

Ooh, what about one of those balancing ropes? Except I've forgotten what they're called for googling...

TheSpottedZebra · 16/02/2021 14:04

Slackline

Great for core stability, so good for skateboarders.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 16/02/2021 14:05

I know screen tune is an issue but what about a raspberry pi?

Lego? Mine all still love it and the older ones like the more complex sets or you could get some of the motors and have fun trying to motorise things.

I was really stuck for dd as her birthday is close to Christmas so had to do double the thinking and ended up getting her a terrarium which she loves.

Iwantitidontwantit · 16/02/2021 14:06

So tricky currently isn't it! For her 11th birthday my daughter got a laptop, big lego set, money, a popcorn machine, new silver earnings, loads of books - she loves Amelia Fang, a gaming bean bag, new blanet and pillow set, and her first grown up perfume. I debated the Lego being too young but we had a conversation where I told her I'd like so Lego myself and could she help me choose. Came up that she still loved it but worried her friends would think she was baby. But she got it anyway and loved it. That plus the perfume were the biggest hits.

MarmaladeBumpkin · 16/02/2021 14:09

Bubble tea kit? My now 12 year old loves Bubble Tea and making it up at home has been really fun

OytheBumbler · 16/02/2021 14:11

An animal experience for when the zoos re-open?

Beamur · 16/02/2021 14:14

How about other sporty stuff you can do at home? My DD is slightly older and into boxing. You could get some gloves and pads to use at home? Decathlon are v good value. DD is getting some pads for her birthday.
Skipping rope?
Also v popular with young teens are LED strip lights for bedrooms and cool Bluetooth speakers, neither of which are particularly expensive.

Labobo · 16/02/2021 14:17

Rollerblades? Even in lockdown she could use them a lot

deathbyprocrastination · 16/02/2021 14:27

Some really great ideas here. Loving the Fitbit & slack line ideas. She did mention roller blades but wondering if it’s a bit much on top of the bike, skateboard and scooter that she already has!

Anyway, tonnes of food for thought.

Re the bubble tea idea: DD1 is massively into these and has been making them at home Smile
