I've just seen that this will air on Sky in the UK tomorrow at 9pm, I know there are a lot of Mumsnetters in the US - has anyone seen it already? If so, what did you make of it?

I’m quite keen to see this.

I actually tracked it down on YouTube and watched it the other night. The time line of her life in the spotlight, the intrusive, inappropriate interviews and the intense media intrusion were very well covered. Her relationship with her parents less so. I was not convinced by the end that her father had done anything wrong. He hasn't misspent or stolen her money. He doesn't seem to control her particularly. Nobody, including Britney, seems to dispute the need for a conservatorship. I think one of the most important points for me is that her mother suspected she suffered post natal depression, but I'm none the wiser if this was treated appropriately or not - I would certainly say that she was put back to work too soon after her breakdown. But we don't know who's decision it was.

So, yeah, a shocking look at what she endured from media etc, but ultimately lots of questions left unanswered. Maybe I missed something...

Franke · 15/02/2021 15:46

Try maybe.

JimmyTheBrave · 15/02/2021 16:26

That's interesting @Franke and thanks for the link, hadn't occurred to me to look on YouTube Grin

I think it isn’t available in the Uk now. I saw Perez Hilton apologising today and felt a flash of anger- he literally made huge amounts of money and a career laughing at her mental anguish for entertainment. I feel he is not genuine but just jumping on the bandwagon

covetingthepreciousthings · 15/02/2021 16:38

I was not convinced by the end that her father had done anything wrong.

I'm not sure if it was covered in the doc.. but I think it's very telling that Britneys Ex Kevin Federline was granted a domestic violence restraining order against her father (so their grandfather) from going anywhere near her two sons..

itallworkedouthorribly · 15/02/2021 16:42

I've seen a bit of it.

Clearly her dad is the wrong person to have control.

But Britney's Instagram style is instantly recognisable if you're familiar with bipolar disorder. She does need someone, just not someone with a financial interest.

In her earlier interviews, before bipolar struck, she was much more authentic and switched on. Now, she's either high or docilely faking a social persona. It's very sad.

Franke · 15/02/2021 17:34

@covetingthepreciousthings. Actually, maybe I zoned out. There may have been something about that but it was very mildly done, or I'd lost interest a bit by then. Perhaps I should watch it again 🤔 I don't know if her father is the right guy for the conservatorship or not - there was no slam dunk, they need to get him away from her moment. I wonder why her mother can't fulfil the role.

I think I was more focused on the outrageous intrusion into her life, and paid less attention to the other stuff She certainly wasn't being protected enough by people who should have known better. She seems to be an emotionally immature person who has been exploited along the way. I just feel sad about it.

LemonSwan · 15/02/2021 18:59

I think its fucked. Having lost my freedom once due to mental health this topic is close to my heart. People can and do recover. Are we saying people with bipolar disorder are not allowed to control any aspect of their life forever. That is outrageous.

The judge calls her 'a high functioning conservatee' and the co-conservator asked a judge to view it as more of a 'hybrid business model'. That is scary bordering on modern day slavery.

I dont think we can judge her appearance or demeanour on SM either. I had a stress induced/ insomnia induced acute psychotic episode 3 years ago - it was over within a couple of weeks but I was still on medication for nearing 4 months after. It took me a long time to recover from that medication and I was not 'normal' when I was on it or for a while afterwards.

Mental health understanding has got better in recent years but its still a real mess. It seems in America it is even more fucked. How a conservatee is meant to overturn a conservatorship when they are ruled to not have the capacity to instruct or counsel their own legal team is beyond me.

Its literally terrifying!

SoLongFurlough · 15/02/2021 19:33

Is it on Virgin?
I’ve just checked and it doesn’t seem to be

lunalucie · 15/02/2021 19:37

@SoLongFurlough it's on sky or now tv.

NinnyNewName · 17/02/2021 00:07

The Family Fortunes-esque scene was horrific.

I wonder KF got custody of their boys. That's quite unusual and I remember during their time together HE was not portrayed well (granted, in the media).

Lots of it really reminded me of Princess Diana.

Heartbrokenstill · 17/02/2021 03:00

Recorded it to watch later on today... I feel really sad for her☹️
