I'm giving up sugar for Lent - anyone in?

tinselandlights · 14/02/2021 21:20

Since Christmas my sugar consumption has been out of control.

I've decided to give up sugar and wheat for Lent, and give the money I would spend on it to the Trussell Trust to keep me on track.

Anyone else in?

Ooh, that sound worth a bash!

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 19/02/2021 22:29

Is anyone else absolutely bloody ravenous? I would have thought that not snacking on penguins and oreos would mean my appetite was a bit more stable, but I'm like a bottomless pit. I'm drinking gallons of water and having extra protein and veg with my meals but I could eat a horse right now.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 20/02/2021 05:39

orange I have been so hungry too but it’s settled a bit.

I’m feeling good. Cravings subsided. It was a bloody awful habit for me.

tinselandlights · 20/02/2021 09:34

@OrangeGinLemonFanta I get like in the week before my period, I could eat a horse and still feel peckish!

I'm not sure I'll lose any weight doing this, because I'm eating more non sugary stuff to make up for it... ah well, I don't really need to lose weight but I want to stop getting sugar headaches. I'm currently eating two fat sourdough wholemeal spelt pancakes with chia seeds, peanut butter, banana and blueberries. Which is clearly not a very Lenten food choice. Oh dear.

Sloth66 · 20/02/2021 10:06

Can I belatedly join you?
Eating way too much sugary junk, and I like your idea of donating money saved.

Dee1975 · 20/02/2021 10:07

Crisps and chocolate in this house. We try and do it most years. (Often there is a slip up!). Crisps is my vice. At least 1 bag a day.
My birthday also falls in lent. But we allowed cake :-)

BigButtons · 20/02/2021 10:40

I am down to one sugar in my many cups of tea. I don’t eat cakes, sweets or choc anyway. There’s no way I could go cold turkey. The one sugar is hard enough.
I’m not giving up alcohol but have cut down a lot.
Haven’t had any bread products since Tuesday. I miss my morning toast the most🥴

chillied · 20/02/2021 13:20

No permission needed Sloth. Any day can be day 1.

I feel I've lost some weight even though it's only been since last Monday for me.

I haven't been feeling too particularly hungry either. I don't know where the willpower is coming from.

SugarfreeBlitz · 20/02/2021 19:00

I'm having bad headaches because I slipped up!

Something I read about Victoria Beckham in the past was that she ate really highly flavoured foods to eat less. I'm not sure if this works, but I've been adding lemon juice and cider vinegar to my afternoon salads in the hopes that I won't get cravings for crisps. (It seems to be helping) Nothing's changed on the scales so far though.

tinselandlights · 20/02/2021 21:21

I've found today ok.

I ate:

B- bacon and eggs
L- chicken sausage casserole
D- steak, mushrooms, sweet corn, oven chops, horseradish/mayonnaise

I feel really tired but otherwise ok. I've been drinking loads of water and peppermint tea.

Oh gosh terrible headache here this morn! Anyone else?

troppibambini6 · 21/02/2021 10:18

Yes but because I had three large glasses of wine last night Grin

Today will be a test as I'm feeling a bit jaded which is when I usually reach for the sugar.

We also had a Lebanese takeaway last night but I was good and dodged all the lovely bread and rice with fried onions and lentils on top.
Still enjoyed it though just had lamb kebab with aubergine salad

tinselandlights · 21/02/2021 10:27

Lebanese is great for low sugar @troppibambini6 and that sounds delicious!

I feel tired today but I did run a 5k yesterday so maybe it's that!

I don't have a headache but do have low energy!

WineInTheWillows · 21/02/2021 10:42

It's Sunday! I'm taking the day off from Lent, as permitted. 😁

tinselandlights · 21/02/2021 12:34

@WineInTheWillows 😂 my grandfather always used to say that!

Feeling a bit meh today and keep thinking I want sweet things. I've had two cups of Yorkshire tea biscuit brew to try to get beyond it.

DarcyJack · 21/02/2021 12:42

3lb lost. Low energy tho, but like Victoria Beckham trying to eat really flavourful food for excitement.

tinselandlights · 21/02/2021 20:08

@DarcyJack I hope the low energy passes for us!!

I had a few little slip ups today but hey, it's Sunday so not real lent!! Had a bite of DD's hot cross bun and made homemade ice cream for her so tasted a bit. Tbh it tasted incredibly sweet, it was actually a bit cloying.

My lovely dc saved me some of their chocolates and were so upset when I said no that I had to relent and eat it... I didn't really enjoy it. Other than that a good day. Fruit for breakfast, roast chicken with 4 kinds of veg and a couple of roasties for lunch, boiled egg and a wholewheat scone for tea.

CorpusCallosum · 22/02/2021 11:22

Hi everyone, I just found you please can I join? My last sweety thing was pancakes last Wednesday. I'd say it's going on except I have wholesale swapped to eating too much cheese and alcohol instead 😫

My tip: I had a baked apple yesterday when I got a little craving, it was delicious and felt like a 'proper pudding' 😋

CorpusCallosum · 22/02/2021 11:22

Going well not going on 🤦‍♀️

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 22/02/2021 11:39

Omg, back to 'homeschooling' and this has suddenly got 100 times harder 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

tinselandlights · 22/02/2021 12:28

Welcome @CorpusCallosum! Jump straight in.

@BewareTheBeardedDragon sending you solidarity! You have my full sympathy.

Coming up to a week now and although I've cut refined sugar without too much pain, I have realised how much bread I eat. So this week I'm eating bread at the weekend and not at all on working days. We'll see how it goes, I'm hoping for some weight loss!

troppibambini6 · 22/02/2021 17:43

Day seven for me. It's not been as bad as I thought so far.

B-bacon and mushroom omelette
L- cauliflower and turmeric soup and some watermelon
S-slice of ham, picked onions and a salt and vinegar rice cake.
D- chicken chorizo and canelini bean stew with a table spoon of rice.

Ok day so far.
