I'm giving up sugar for Lent - anyone in?

tinselandlights · 14/02/2021 21:20

Since Christmas my sugar consumption has been out of control.

I've decided to give up sugar and wheat for Lent, and give the money I would spend on it to the Trussell Trust to keep me on track.

Anyone else in?

@lockdownbear I think I lost an extra stone. The last time I did it I didn't eat anything with processed sugar in - inc bread, sauces, crisps as well as the obvious

WineInTheWillows · 14/02/2021 21:57

I've thought of that @4LeafClover21 but it doesn't seem very in the spirit.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 14/02/2021 21:57

I’m in too! Not wheat, though. I will, however, give up crisps and takeaways as well as sugar. Which will be hard going!

I’ve done this before and I ate fruit but cut anything with added sugar eg jam, sweetened yoghurts, fizzy drinks. Also I won’t have artificial sweeteners because they just keep me craving sugar.

WouldstrokeTomHardy · 14/02/2021 21:58

I'm in. I'm a pig with sugar just now (stopped boozing). When is lent?

Lovelydovey · 14/02/2021 21:59

I’m in for giving up processed sugar (fruit and non sugary carbs still ok). I’m a bit addicted...

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 14/02/2021 21:59

Pancake Day is Tuesday, so Lent starts on Wed.

WouldstrokeTomHardy · 14/02/2021 22:00

Thank you @Too

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 14/02/2021 22:00

I did 3 weeks without any added sugar recently. Felt so much better and my consumption has reduced massively since then. I feel like I can take it or leave it most of the time now, which is amazing for me because I've been a sugar addict all my life really.

tinselandlights · 14/02/2021 22:02

Ok this sounds good!

I think we can all decide what our own limitations are for what to consider sugar as. For me those energy balls @Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow would be classed as sugar because I'd eat tonnes and then have a crash Blush. There is sugar in SO much stuff (I've tried this before!) - things like supermarket ham have sugar in if you check the label.

So for me, I'll class sugar as:
Sweets
Chocolate
Dried fruit
I'll try to check supermarket food labels
Wheat (turns to sugar in the body so gives me a sugar crash)

If I can stick to those I'll be doing well!
I'll still have whole fruits, but maybe one serving a day rather than tonnes. I'll still have milk in tea and porridge.

I'm about a stone overweight so hope I can shift some of that.

@WineInTheWillows you definitely get your birthday off! Star

Great idea. I may just give up biscuits for lent. I did it a few years ago and stopped for a couple of years.
About 15 years ago I gave up pop for lent and haven't gone back. I think I've had about 4 or 5 in the last 15 years when little else was availible and feel awful after it, hoping biscuits will be the same.

tinselandlights · 14/02/2021 22:06

@Nowmum43 some Catholics do have Sundays off during Lent - I'm going to try to stick to it because I think if I start having days off the cravings won't go away!

I'm in ( ish).
Im just giving up the obvious sugary snacks though, not the sugar that is in alcohol, etc

Eckhart · 14/02/2021 22:07

Your teeth will feel so clean...

Archersandlemonade · 14/02/2021 22:09

@4LeafClover21 exactly! I bought the davinamcalll give up sugar book and by god there was nothing left to eat

4LeafClover21 · 14/02/2021 22:11

Im feeling a little lent support group growing here lol Smile Grin

smileyplant · 14/02/2021 22:29

I think I'll try and do
Chocolate
Biscuits and Bread.
Excited to have something keeping me accountable Smile

oatmilk4breakfast · 14/02/2021 22:33

Yes I was going to do this anyway but like the additional donation element. I was planning to also fast on Wednesdays (only one meal).

SugarfreeBlitz · 14/02/2021 22:34

Yes I'm in.
Since Christmas my only sweet treat has been dark chocolate. At first it was ok because I hated it and could only eat 2 squares, but then it backfired because I got to like the taste and started binging whole bars. Now going cold turkey. Need to get some control back and lose weight too.

oatmilk4breakfast · 14/02/2021 22:34

For me it will be (As long as I can manage it) no sugar dairy or wheat. Well done everyone. I am hoping to use it as a time when I can get clarity on a few things, things have been a bit tough and want to think straight again.

GoodSister · 14/02/2021 22:35

I’m in, sugar not wheat, my sugar consumption is at an all time high, so it is good timing

oatmilk4breakfast · 14/02/2021 22:36

I need to make a plan and stick to it. I was wondering what to do about fruit honey and wine (my birthday in feb) so maybe I will allow those on sundays??

JackieeWeaver · 14/02/2021 22:37

Yes me too 🙋🏼‍♀️

Lightningcrops · 14/02/2021 22:37

Fruit has sugar, but it also has vitamins and nutrients etc, so on balance its still healthy. I am up for giving up refined sugar.

MrsDThomas · 14/02/2021 22:45

I should. Including carbs and wine.

But a girl needs something!
