I'm giving up sugar for Lent - anyone in?

tinselandlights · 14/02/2021 21:20

Since Christmas my sugar consumption has been out of control.

I've decided to give up sugar and wheat for Lent, and give the money I would spend on it to the Trussell Trust to keep me on track.

Anyone else in?

I actually feel really great but then had a rubbish day at work and comfort ate some handfuls of dried muesli. How sad is that?!

GlamGiraffe · 25/02/2021 20:28

Ive only just discovered this thread. I gave up sweetsn chocolate, budcuits, cakes, cridos, frackers and that type of thing this year. Im allowed a smear of marmalade in terms of refined sugar and thats it. Im definitely being tested. My adult son snd DH bring in bags of sweets and cakes pretty much daily. Id normally eats lots of the stuff but have hern good although yesterday i felt really unwell after my covid jab and had a biscuit, now im annoyed that i had it. I think im actually a bit less puffy around the middle after this short time (although its not to do with weightloss for me). Its intetesting to see the effects processed stuff has on us.
Im going to have to dig really deep to last until easter😬

chillied · 25/02/2021 21:25

dig deep glamgiraffe!

I also think there's less of me round the middle.

I feel like my appetite is more under control too.

tinselandlights · 26/02/2021 19:50

Eek I fell off the wagon today! Ended up stress buying a bag of revels and polishing off the whole lot 😳😳😳

I have had one of the busiest weeks of my entire career so I'm going to be kind to myself and get back on that sugar free wagon!!

I have however lost three quarters of a pound, which makes nearly 5lbs off in Lent

I'm really missing sugar today after a difficult night with my toddler. Still on the wagon though! Does anyone have any low carb snack ideas? I'm eating way too much fruit at the moment.

I tend to eat lots of protein anyway and go for: slices of turkey, chicken, ham or pastrami; boiled eggs and spinach; celery and hummus; apple and peanut butter; protein shake; small wedges of cheese.

Hope the feeling passes soon, there’s an actual science thing isn’t there about sleep deprivation leaving you craving sugar

UnbeatenMum · 27/02/2021 14:50

@ShirleyPhallus thanks, I could definitely boil some eggs later and already have cheese and ham and peanut butter. I think you're right about sleep and sugar, I've definitely put on weight recently which has coincided with DC3 not sleeping brilliantly.

troppibambini6 · 27/02/2021 15:19

Definitely right about craving sugar when tired. I had 3 under four at one point and I was like an ant always on the hunt for the next biscuit ot sweet thing it was all that kept me going.
I hope you have a better night tonight @UnbeatenMum

troppibambini6 · 27/02/2021 15:20

Oh and a good snack I find it a few raspberries with a big dollop of Greek yogurt and some flaked almonds. Greek yogurt is high in protein too so really fills you up. I use frozen raspberries and heat them in the microwave.

chillied · 27/02/2021 15:55

Well done tinsel, for the busiest week ever plus getting back on the no-sugar wagon.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 27/02/2021 17:28

Greek yoghurt is definitely ace for filling you up, and has the bonus of being unctuous and consequently feeling indulgent.

tinselandlights · 27/02/2021 17:45

Thank you @chillied! My DH let me have a huge lie in this morning and got up with our DD which was v kind!

@UnbeatenMum the low carb snacks I like are things like celery and peanut butter, sliced ham, and a few nuts. Being tired is the WORST though, it's like I have no impulse control and end up scarfing a load of food before I even think about it!

UnbeatenMum · 27/02/2021 17:54

Thanks @troppibambini6 and @tinselandlights. It's DH's turn to get up tomorrow so I should get a bit more sleep. Fingers crossed!

tinselandlights · 28/02/2021 08:13

Feel much better today! My plan is to have:
B- smoked salmon on rye toast
L- maybe ham salad
D- roast lamb with vegetables

How’s everyone doing? I have actually found it surprisingly ok, has definitely stopped the cravings for carbs / sugar.

Had a fancy dinner last night and was absolutely fine with no pudding. So far, so good!

troppibambini6 · 28/02/2021 20:33

I ate a couple of dds homemade ginger biscuits yesterday.
I'm cross with myself today. No idea why I did it but I did, other than that I'm doing ok.
L- ham cucumber and pickled onions
D-roast beef, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, peas and gravy.
S-greek yogurt, banana and flaked almonds.

I don't know if I'm imagining it but my skin seems brighter. I have really upped my water intake too so maybe a combination of both is helping.

Docketpuo · 28/02/2021 20:37

I did this one year but kept fruit and wine Blush

This year I have just given up chocolate. I am finding the danger is the temptation to booze in the evening instead!

tinselandlights · 01/03/2021 21:30

@ShirleyPhallus I've got into my stride quite well!

Today I've eaten:
B- smoked salmon on rye toast
L- chicken sausages with spinach and lentils
D- lamb and potato curry with brown rice

Is it normal to look more flabby after exercising every day (and not actually losing any weight?) Asking for a friend! Grin

It's wierd but I feel stronger, but look more blobby. Am confused! Confused Am counted as "obese", if that's any help?

I guess it is possible you have more muscle and less fat now and as muscle takes up less space your skin may not be as plumped out as it was until it shrinks back. It could also be because it is so hard to be objective looking at ourselves and it just feel like you look that way after you have felt your body move around a lot during exercise.

Whatever it is, you are doing he right things, keep going.

It depends on what exercise you’re doing, are you doing any resistance / weights work?
SugarfreeBlitz · 02/03/2021 13:59

Thanks ODDBOOTS and SHIRLEYPHALLUS. I've been doing spin bike and Zumba but I just look wobbly! I feel firmer deep down, but the layers of fat above the muscle look a lot worse, somehow if that makes sense?
The fat was a lot firmer before.
I haven't done weights, but maybe I should.

I’d really recommend you try weights, it will help you to build muscle which will mean your body is burning more calories when at rest and will give you some definition (when people say “tone up” they just mean lose fat and build muscle).

You can start with body weight exercises - lunges, squats, push-ups etc then if you think you like those then look at adding weight. Just don’t go for weedy

ShirleyPhallus · 02/03/2021 14:16

Posted too soon

Don’t go for weedy 1lbs weights, you need something heavier
