I'm giving up sugar for Lent - anyone in?

tinselandlights · 14/02/2021 21:20

Since Christmas my sugar consumption has been out of control.

I've decided to give up sugar and wheat for Lent, and give the money I would spend on it to the Trussell Trust to keep me on track.

Anyone else in?

I’m giving up alcohol, takeaways and generally being as plant based as possible! I am a huge believer in everyone consuming 10% less animal product has more impact than a few people being 100% perfect when it comes to things like veganism. Which I know this post isn’t about, but it’s the sentiment!

Rainydaysandmondays2 · 14/02/2021 22:54

This has come at a great time. I have up refined sugar at the start of January, initially just for six weeks which ended on Friday. I’m wondering if I should carry it on and I’m taking this thread as a sign to continue.

Redskyyy · 14/02/2021 22:59

I will join. My sugar consumption is out of control! I did this a few years ago. First few days were really tough but I felt amazing by the end.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 14/02/2021 23:06

I've never given anything up for lent before, but I need a lockdown interest so I'll give it a go Grin
Not wheat - white processed wheat maybe, processed sugar definitely. I will still eat fruit because the sugar in fruit doesn't make you crash because your body has to work so hard to get it with all the fibre involved. Plus I love fruit and would go mad without it.

feellikeanun · 14/02/2021 23:37

Chocolate for me.
Takes about a week to get over the side effects of no chocolate 😕

gospelsinger · 14/02/2021 23:40

Yes I'm in. No choc, biscuits, dried fruit, breakfast cereal, cake or puddings except fruit. Also will aim not to up my crisp consumption to compensate.

Lockdownbear · 14/02/2021 23:46
@lockdownbear I think I lost an extra stone. The last time I did it I didn't eat anything with processed sugar in - inc bread, sauces, crisps as well as the obvious
Dropping a stone is amazing.
I think I might try and talk DH into doing it too.

DipSwimSwoosh · 15/02/2021 00:54

Yes, brilliant idea!
I will give up cakes, biscuits, chocolate etc, but not fruit. Actually not dark chocolate either as I am severely anaemic and it's a treat which can help there.

Beforethetakingoftoastandtea · 15/02/2021 00:59

I gave up meat two years ago and haven't had any since. Ive hinted to dh today I'm thinking about going vegan for lent this year. He isn't happy. He does all the cooking.

Mally2020 · 15/02/2021 01:10

giving up alcohol for lent x

WiltedDaffs · 15/02/2021 01:18

Oh I really need to do this, my sugar consumption has been crazy since Christmas. I'm in.

Will give up refined sugar. I doubt I'm getting my five-a-day right now so swapping biscuits and crap for an apple would be a big improvement!

Significantown · 15/02/2021 01:28

I’m in. I gave up meat one year snd lost weight. I think it was having my diet filled with lots of vegetables that helped.

I lost a stone in lockdown one but have regained 7lb. It would be nice at the very least to lose that again.

SquirtleSquad · 15/02/2021 01:35

I'm in! I'm trying to lose weight before having surgery at the end of March and anything to keep me motivated will
Help!

Wishingwell75 · 15/02/2021 03:00

Yep, count me in! I really thought the Sundays thing was a joke but I know that if I had a "re - lent" day it would be harder for me to keep off sugar the other six days!
I will still have fruit but lower sugar options - think berries not mango.
This is my year of meeting myself with kindness and not criticism so I will probably start with obvious sugars and gradually add hidden sugars as the weeks progress.
Pancakes on Tuesday though, big time!!!!😁

Begonias · 15/02/2021 06:08

I'm in, so for me I'm going to give up;
Fizzy pop
Chocolates
Sweets
Crisps

I eat out of boredom and really need to lose at least a stone. Last march I weighed 125lbs currently at 143lbs. I might even try HIIT exercises such as T25. I need to be able to report back, in order to stick to any diet or exercise

Archersandlemonade · 15/02/2021 07:24

Morning . I forgot. Probably as I’d had a few glasses
Last night and forgot about this thread Blush - 2 sugars in my tea already this morning. I think for me just the that is going to be so hard. I’m determined not to sub the sugar for sweetener- won’t that be like the same thing?
Off to work now with a bottle of water

Archersandlemonade · 15/02/2021 07:24

Good luck everyone xxx

SoisPoli · 15/02/2021 07:57

I'm in. Will stop chocolate, biscuits, cake, soft drinks.

For the birthday folks, I remember reading an article where you can have SOS sugar

Social obligation sugar

So if you don't want to be a killjoy at a party (remember those?Hmm) you f ce an have a little piece.

I'm on steroids so weight creeping up and also my condition may improve with a better diet. Worth a go!

SisterLuke · 15/02/2021 08:07

I think I'm in! I'm doing the weekly shop today, so will make sure to be strict.

troppibambini6 · 15/02/2021 08:15

Can I join you too?
I'm going to stop biscuits, cakes and all the rubbish but I will be careful with stuff like baked beans/ketchup etc...
Also no alcohol as it just makes me want to eat rubbish.
I'm totally addicted to sugar and it's the only thing that trips me up over and over agin when it comes to losing weight.

troppibambini6 · 15/02/2021 08:16

Oh and I'm starting today as if planned to before reading this thread will let you know how day one goes!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 15/02/2021 08:22

Lent doesn't start til Wednesday!
BewareTheBeardedDragon · 15/02/2021 08:25

I gave up sugar in tea and coffee some years ago, and for me I found cold Turkey was the way to go. It took a while but I actively enjoy they without now and fine them cloying with.

Iwantacampervan · 15/02/2021 08:36

I'm in this year - my aim is to give up chocolate, sweets, biscuits & cake. Also, I know I need to drink more water and eat more fruit/veg so I'll try to replace snacks with something more healthy.

pinkprosseco · 15/02/2021 08:52

I want to try. I've put on just over a stone in lockdown and with the cold weather I regularly eat chocolate and cake in the evening. I can't stop myself so having a time limited period might help. Good suggestion.
