Do I need an iPad?

I’ve got some spare money and have been eyeing up an iPad. Currently I only have my phone for browsing the internet etc and I’m not sure it’s great for my eyes, also it’s quite slow. Don’t really want to use my work laptop for watching tv/browsing the internet as it means I inevitably get sucked into emails/notifications etc Grin

So do I need an iPad? Talk to me about what you use yours for please.

You definitely need one. I watch TV on mine, also use it on my spin bike to do classes. Have it on the kitchen island to follow recipes - easier to see than my phone. Plus the usual web browsing/online shopping. Also you get free Apple TV for a year.

I treated myself to one mid way through the first lockdown. I got a free pair of ear phones with it. I also bought a keyboard case. I love it because i can see it without having to use my glasses, i can watch films / videos and listen to them whilst DH is glued to the footie, and I’m able to prep some of my online teaching on it - much more promotable than a laptop.
Yes, its a luxury but if it broke I’d definitely replace it.

Soontobe60 · 14/02/2021 19:24

Oh yes to watching recipes on YouTube whilst cooking!

Backtobacktheyfacedeachother · 14/02/2021 19:25

Everything!
iPhone is too small to be picking items to put in the basket for the weekly shop.
Email
Browsing the internet
Playing games
Just reminded me I need to order my prescription on it
Yoga videos for my morning yoga
If I find a recipe I want to cook I carry the iPad to the kitchen & cook.
I do all internet shopping for any gifts on the iPad
Banking

DH has a laptop but I never use it.

Nobody needs an ipad.
All of the above can be done on a laptop, netbook or tablet.
But if you really want an ipad, and can afford one, then get one.

I love my iPad. I got it before I got a cell phone. If you want to use it propped up for watching tv/streaming or reading recipes, get a good cover/stand.

I have a Samsung galaxy tab a that I love for using for the Internet, zoom, and all the tv apps. Actually bought it to replace an ipad that no longer supports updates so can't use for Netflix or other apps.
I wouldn't get another ipad but the galaxy tab is really good, cheaper and easier to use.

I love mine. I use it for reading in low light (black screen, white text, lowest brightness - I can see perfectly and Dh doesn’t wake up because there’s no glare), streaming TV when I’m doing housework (it just move to whichever room I’m in), reading and tv at the gym (back when there was a gym...).

This is a bit niche perhaps but I’m in grad school and I can split screen between Good Notes and my text books, letting me take notes while I read on the same device and produce a digital précis of a unit which works well for me visually (diagrams, colour, no walls of text).

My family all live in different countries. My sisters and I quite often leave FaceTime calls open on them and can prep meals together etc.

I can’t imagine not having it available, but it hasn’t replaced my phone or my laptop. If you can afford it, I don’t think you’d regret it.

I looooove my iPad!

I'm a mature student to be fair and I use the good notes app for all my note taking but aside from that I love being able to watch stuff if DH has sports on the big TV and it's good for watching videos/following recipes/doing shopping etc! It's fab, get one!!

Kotbullar · 14/02/2021 19:53

I ditched my iPad when I got an iPhone. I got it out for homeschooling and it seems so cumbersome now.

Bluntness100 · 14/02/2021 19:57

I use mine all the time . I don’t know how folks cope doing everything on a tiny phone screen or a cumbersome lap top

JakesMum88 · 14/02/2021 20:03

I prefer browsing on a tablet to a phone. If you are an Apple person and have an iPhone then an iPad should be your tablet of choice as you will be more familiar with it and it will tie in better with your phone. If not then I recommend a Galaxy Tab. The quality is really good and I find Android easier to use than iOS.

RozHuntleysStump · 14/02/2021 20:46

I have the big iPad and others set up around the house. Essential!

doctorhamster · 14/02/2021 20:51

I personally can't see the point in getting one when it just does what I can do on my phone.

SylviaPlath1984 · 14/02/2021 21:11

They are great! I love taking mine to the bath and watching movies whilst I soak and top up the hot water now and again. Changed bath time for me!

Catastrophie · 14/02/2021 22:27

Yes have an iPhone, and my screen time is shocking atm as I use it for everything. Making me think it can’t be good for my eyes...

I'm not sure you need one but they're rather lovely to have.

I bought one to use as a second screen for my laptop when travelling. DS borrowed it to use it for school, and he loves it and I never got it back.

I recently replaced it with an iPad mini and I'm really happy with it. I read magazines with Readly (I'm in the US but I love UK magazines). I browse the web. I watch TV. I read the news. I MN. Before long journeys I download a couple of TV series or films to watch.

It's a good size for popping in your bag.
