Upmarket but not flashy or tacky? Yet relaxed and casual? Beach, restaurants and shops? Child friendly?

I couldn't recommend San Sebastián enough - has everything, amazing food, amazing beaches, lovely old town and if it is still there a lovely little fun fair.

My friends normally go to Mallorca (admittedly not mainland). I went to Gijon and were the only English there, nobody spoke English, tricky as my Spanish is rubbish.

We have fairly posh Spanish friends. They go to Palma (Majorca) for short breaks.

I think a lot of people from mainland Spain also go to the Canaries or Costa del Sol, but just not the places aimed at Brits who want Blackpool in the sun, of which there are many.

The Costa de La Luz is very popular with Spaniards from Madrid / Seville / much quieter, very beautiful.
