It’s about the size of a tennis ball, up in a corner of the garage, no idea how long it’s been there...

Yes

clopper · 14/02/2021 10:26

Yes I think it is. I had one in the corner of my shed

Konga · 14/02/2021 10:27

Ok, follow up questions. Are wasps likely to come back to it? What should I do with it?

If it's empty I'd knock it down. If it's not empty, I'd still knock it down, but I'd make sure I had a very swift exit route I could shut behind me!

Weedsnseeds1 · 14/02/2021 10:30

Yes. They don't reuse old nests.

Wickstead · 14/02/2021 10:30

Yes.

It’s likely to be empty now and they aren’t reused so isn’t anything to worry about.

LIZS · 14/02/2021 10:32

Yes but they won't be there now nor return to it. We have however had new ones in same location after a few years.

passtheorange · 14/02/2021 10:34

Yes. Solitary wasp's nest I think. We had one in our shed that was about golf-ball sized. I saw it going in and out sometimes, and it didn't look like your regular wasp.

Konga · 14/02/2021 11:09

Thanks, I’ll keep an eye out for new ones appearing...

agree it looks like an old wasp nest. The initial asian hornet nests are quite small like this, so if anyone does spot something similar check to see what is flying in/out. If it does look like a hornet check to see what is thorax/bottom looks like and check online. Report anything suspect to your local beekeeping association. asian hornets are bad news and we need to keep them out of the uk for as long as possible
