Am I the only saddo that did a secret Valentine's card for my teen DS?

I mean a card from your mum is a bit cringeworthy. Maybe ok for a 5-year-old, but for a teen??

Eviethyme · 14/02/2021 10:55

I wouldn't do it as a surprise. Everytime Valentine our family will have a tradition of a sit down meal and a gift box for each person so one for us adults and 1 for the kids we don't just do it as a adult thing.

Normally for our kids it's more keepsakes rather than toys.. Stuff that says I love you, like personalised jewelery or something different etc

Impeachtheplum · 14/02/2021 11:01

Mean. My parents did the same which sent the message that I was clearly too undesirable that I obviously wouldn’t have got one from a real boy. It made me feel on top of the world for the 10 seconds I saw it laying on the mat until I recognised my fathers handwriting.
I lay on my bed and doubly broke my heart - one because again I never got a card from a secret admirer and the knowledge cemented in my heart that even my parents knew I wasn’t getting one.
I’ve never forgotten it 30 years on.

Clymene · 14/02/2021 11:03

@KarensChoppyBob

I've done it since he was at late primary school. He doesn't make a big deal of it, I'm sure he does know it's me. I thought it was a nice thing! Family tradition- I did fir his sister but she's 20 now. Trust MN to make it An Awful Thing To Do Hmm.
Well that's a completely different thing. Why didn't you say that in your OP? Hmm right back at you
KarensChoppyBob · 14/02/2021 15:37

Fgs It was a tongue-in-cheek 'saddo', forgot that you have to put 'lighthearted' in the title these days just in case people alert SS Wink.

I used to when mine were little. Not after they left primary school though.

GrinGrin

ThenCatoJumpedOut · 14/02/2021 15:51

Ahhh nooo

Cringey OP Grin

But hey I am sure we all make our teens cringe all the time (through merely existing Grin)

Blessex · 14/02/2021 15:53

Of course I get my teenage DS and DD a Valentine card each. Of course!!!!!

Blessex · 14/02/2021 15:54

And they get one from my mum too!!!!!

Blessex · 14/02/2021 15:56

And then they text their gran back and wish her a happy Valentine’s Day too. The more love in the world the better. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone.

MarshaBradyo · 14/02/2021 15:59

No Sounds really cringey

MindfulBitch · 14/02/2021 16:09

When I was growing up my mum and dad always sent me one but I knew it was from them.

We bought my DD a card and I made her heart shaped crumpets for her breakfast. She's seven. I will still be celebrating with her when she's older.

It's just a bit of fun.

Especially in lockdown.

hamstersarse · 14/02/2021 16:12

Sorry op, but I think that’s a bit creepy.

AndTheMillions · 14/02/2021 16:13

I got my 10 and 12 y old dc some heart shaped chocolates and sweets and a card each

dementedpixie · 14/02/2021 16:15

I think it's a strange thing to do. Not something I'd consider doing for my kids

grapewine · 14/02/2021 16:18

That's just strange and cringeworthy. Lighthearted or not.

BabyYoda · 14/02/2021 16:19

I would have been mortified if my parents got me a Valentines card as a teenager but I was probably also embarrassed by them talking, walking and breathing. Depends on the teenager I guess?

clpsmum · 14/02/2021 16:21

No I did a secret valentines for my three dc. One has severe learning difficulties and does not have the foggiest idea what card is or who it's for but wouldn't leave one out lol!

I also bought them all a gift from me! Valentines is a day to celebrate love and we did that!

clpsmum · 14/02/2021 16:23

@KarensChoppyBob ignore the ones that are moaning ffs people on Mumsnet are offended so easily.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 14/02/2021 16:23

My dad did this to me once as a teenager. I felt so upset when I found out it was him. I felt like he was taking the piss out of me.

Exactly this.
topcat2014 · 14/02/2021 16:26

Well, I buy two cards (at about 1.50 each) - one for DW and one for DD(14).

That is the sum total of what we do on valentines day.
DD knows its from me, even though I write left handed :).

There's precious little humour in the world right now.

When DD was smaller she used to send and receive one from her friends.

BackforGood · 14/02/2021 16:26

I genuinely can't understand why anyone would do that.
Poor lad.

ColdandFrosty1 · 14/02/2021 16:27

I'm 26 and my mum did and always has, she doesn't hide its from her though! Grin. My sister did one for me as well although I'm not sure its out of pity...
