Royal Mail Scam - I clicked the link

I should know better but my sense has obviously left me this week! Got a text from Royal Mail - Your parcel is waiting for delivery, please confirm the settlement of £2.99 on the following link: royalmail-missed......

I clicked the link and put in my personal info - name, address, DOB pressed continue and it asked for card details. Stopped at this point.

My worry is can they do anything from me clicking on the link on my phone and/or entering my personal info? Can they access my phone?

I’m in the middle of getting a mortgage and I’m already terrified something will go wrong and now I have this worry!

And... I know I shouldn’t have clicked the link and put in my info. Just looking for some friendly feedback.

I am not an expert but giving this a bump....

I hope everything turns out okay.

captainprincess · 13/02/2021 11:45

I would have it would be fine as you didn't enter your card details. Don't beat yourself up, we've all done stuff like that. Though, maybe not a good idea to put the link in your post, if that was the same link?

Thanks all... I removed the end of the link I was sent so it’s not the actual link.

I’m On the edge as it is with the mortgage application and then I go and do this Blush

I got that text and the site it took you to was a good one, then i saw it was asking me for my DoB and royal mail knew my number so I stopped and thought, why the fuck would royal mail need my DoB to arrange delivery of an item. Then I realised none of the clickies on the website went anywhere.

So I replied to the text and called them scamming fuckers. Grin

Neenan · 13/02/2021 12:12

oh, and i checked the parcel number on the real royal mail website and no suprise it wasnt a valid parcel number.

tommika · 13/02/2021 12:15

Probably not, as they are after your card or bank details

However for reassurance you can have a try with anti malware / anti virus software in case a tracker etc had been left

Some are available for smartphones
Malwarebytes is one of my favorites, and if on computer Ccleaner can do a tidy up if
(Note that if you run ccleaners default options it will clear out caches and you will have to log back into websites that are normally set to remember you each time)

DatingDickheads · 13/02/2021 12:18

@Neenan I don’t know how I got sucked in so easily!

If you still have the text message you should forward it to number 7726 (I have had to do this a few times).

DatingDickheads · 13/02/2021 12:20

Thanks @tommika I will have a look at that. It was on my phone. I’ve taken my banking apps off just to be safe.

I’m now paranoid someone tries to take out credit in my name!

OP posts:
DatingDickheads · 13/02/2021 12:22

@snowy0wl I will do that. Just looked that up, I didn’t know about it.

OhWhyNot · 13/02/2021 12:27

I received the same text this morning

I looked it up first as my friend had a scam email from Royal Mail so was aware of this or I would have followed it (as only send something off the other day I rarely post parcels so strange coincidence)

I think you will be fine they want access to your account to draw money out quickly which they won’t get

tommika · 13/02/2021 12:35

PS don’t panic if anything is found, as there is usualy something - dodgy software just exploits features which other software can use ‘properly’

Never trust software that finds thousands of problems but asks for payment to fix them.
Reputable software will cleanup for free and just try to get subscriptions for extra features

Whichnamepls · 13/02/2021 12:59

No you'll be fine. I did the same as you with a DHL link and nothing further came of it. They just want your card details.

DatingDickheads · 13/02/2021 13:35

@OhWhyNot I’ve been posting a lot of documents this week and I’m waiting on documents to be returned so I just assumed it was all to do with that. Coincidence?!

DatingDickheads · 13/02/2021 13:37

Thanks for all your help @tommika

It’s strange

I haven’t posted a parcel via Royal Mail for at least a year

Two days later I get this text

I think scamming companies gain access to information we pass on and we are not always informed and it’s not picked up in for a while (not suggesting Royal Mail are involved in this)

Neenan · 13/02/2021 18:39
@Neenan I don’t know how I got sucked in so easily!
Don’t feel bad, you didn’t get sucked in easily, it was a very professional site I agree.

It’s only because we have loads of mandatory training at work about phishing and what to look for that I was a little bit suspicious, but I did click the link too, it was the DoB that got me.

Jen9177 · 26/02/2021 18:14

Hi OP - I was wondering if anything came about of this? I received the EXACT thing this morning and I too clicked the link and filled in the first page of details and then stopped at the second page, I am also currently going through buying a house which seems so strange as both of us obviously have a deposit sitting in our account which is such a coincidence to then get this same scam. I’ve been checking my mobile banking all day I am so anxious, please tell me everything is fine your end and they didn’t manage to get any of your money?? Xxxxxx

DatingDickheads · 26/02/2021 19:02

@Jen9177 nothing happened. I was an anxious wreck for a week checking my accounts all the time and changed all my passwords but nothing happened.

Have you posted anything recently? Myself and another poster had both recently posted parcels not long before receiving this text.

Good luck with the house move! Xxx
