Anthea Turner - fat shaming and disablist (covid)

So Anthea Turner has felt the wrath of pretty much everyone for her recent Tweet. Very silly of her, being someone in the public eye.

I felt she was trying to make a valid point but failed terribly with that offensive cartoon. And what did she mean with the caption "Go for it"?

I have no care for the opinion of a person who gave a gobble job to a Snowflake for the pounds and press.

BallsToYouSue · 13/02/2021 11:25

Holy shit! That's the sort of wanky attitude I only see among a number of Mumsnetters. Well, doesn't she look quite the cunt? Lol that she's getting it in the neck on Twitter 🤣. And I usually hate the Twitter mob, but haaaaa!

gildalilly · 13/02/2021 11:30

*People with very little agency due to poverty end up depressed and for the most part end up on antidepressants. antidepressants cause weight gain.

The prescribing of anti depressants has increased, levels of insecure work have increased, parasitic landlords with extortionate rents have increased, levels of obesity have increased, they cant be linked can they? Nah lets blame the fat and disabled that'll fix it, shame is a good motivator right?*

She’s a nasty piece of work, she has always had strong opinions of overweight people.

LApprentiSorcier · 13/02/2021 11:34

I've said this on many similar threads recently - it is a myth that all fat people eat junk food - Macdonalds, takeaway, crisps, chocolate etc. Modest overeating of any food can cause slow weight gain over a long period of time. If you gain 1/4 lb a week, that adds up to almost a stone a year. Some people seem to have bodies that naturally control this - others don't, particularly when you get older and pass the menopause. The weight just creeps on. And if you are not eating any unhealthy foods it can be difficult to lose that weight because you haven't really got a lot in your diet to cut out.

wowier · 13/02/2021 11:34

The whole "now is not the time" attitude is utterly tragic. Now is most certainly the time.

What does that look like then? In my neck of the woods people are juggling work & homeschooling, access to gyms & sports is none existent. GP appointments are rare. mental health waiting lists are longer than ever.

How would you do it?

wowier · 13/02/2021 11:37

@GlittercheeksOakleaf good for you.

ChocOrange1 · 13/02/2021 11:43

Personally, I’d ban all toxic junk food. It’s just not a very popular opinion...curiously amongst the people who consume it most...who are also overweight / obese
If they won't ban smoking and alcohol, there's no way they will ban junk food. I would actually not be against a ban on all three. But the arguments against smoking and alcohol bans are that it would become an underground market, and that people are addicted and would suffer withdrawal. The same would be true for mcdonalds.

But once you realise you are overweight you need to stop that constant gain. Increase exercise and decrease calories. I’m on a low carb diet has worked wonders. I didn’t eat many takeaways before but loved pasta, bread etc. Using excuses like having children , menopause etc keeps the weight on
wowier · 13/02/2021 11:44

It’s the hypocrisy that exists in seeing someone who clearly doesn’t look out for their own health, demanding that others do

Yes but that's not just applicable to obesity is it? Take my aunt who is shielding & wants schools closed forever & harsher lockdowns. Except she constantly breaks rules, then went abroad for the summer. She even broke the Christmas lockdown & hosted family but still turned round in Jan & said she couldn't understand the rise in cases. People obviously were not being as careful as her in her eyes, I reckon she also blames overweight people 🙄

Tinacollada · 13/02/2021 11:45

@wowier very well said

Melange99 · 13/02/2021 11:49

@Beyondfedupnow - you said, "She’s a nasty piece of work, she has always had strong opinions of overweight people." Which I assume is about Turner, could you point us in the direction of her previously held strong opinions. Just had a quick Google and it it comes up with is the fallout from her posting the image.

LApprentiSorcier · 13/02/2021 11:50

You're missing the point I'm trying to make. The cartoon image shows someone with a Macdonalds. There are numerous references on this thread to junk food, closing off the chocolate aisle in the supermarket etc.

What I am saying is that the image of an overweight person overeating shouldn't be assumed to be someone eating a burger followed by a bag of crisps and a Mars Bar. The image of an overweight person eating too much is more likely to be someone having two slices of toast in the morning instead of one - and that's it, that's the degree of their over-eating.

GoldenGumballs · 13/02/2021 11:54

The mortality rate for people with a learning disability is 6 times that of the general population. Maybe we should stop being so unkind and pigeon hiking all the obese as greedy and lazy. There are many factors involved. Where’s the compassion?

GoldenGumballs · 13/02/2021 11:55

Pigeon holing! Pigeon hiking is what Anthea would do to fat pigeons.

GoldenGumballs · 13/02/2021 11:56

Also should have said Covid mortality rate.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 13/02/2021 11:57

'And obesity, just like anorexia, is a mental illness that manifests in a physical condition. '

It is not like anorexia. A very small percentage may have mh conditions/eating disorders. The vast majority jump on that bandwagon but actually just eat too much of the wrong stuff. We all know it. This constant enabling and excusing does not help anybody.

I could easily be overweight if I ate what I liked and didn't exercise. People need to start taking some responsibility, as a pp said the majority of patients in icu with covid are overweight yet we have to tip toe around the fact incase we upset people.

I never see a fat person on a brisk 1 hour long walk on the beach. Never. Yes, queuing to get chips but not actually briskly walking.

Alcoholics probably have mh problems too yet we don't pat them on the back and nod along to their excuses, we try and support them to live healthily. Why is it all so taboo with fat people?

Jasmin3Tea · 13/02/2021 11:57

I think the point of wearing a mask vs losing weight is that... wearing a mask instantly reduces the transmission of the virus whereas losing weight could take months/years and does not reduce risk of transmission but changes how the virus affects them. how long do you want the pandemic to go on for? The government and the nhs have picked a hill to die on and its wear a fucking mask and stay the fuck home when possible not lose weight and see how we do in a few years.

notacooldad · 13/02/2021 12:02

Why are we all acting like it matters what Anthea Turner thinks?
She is entitled to her opinion just like you are.
She is free to post on twitter it was others that picked it up and ran with it, getting all outraged in the process.

Bit of a juxtaposition with using your wedding to advertise chocolate though.
She wasn't over weight or in the middle of a pandemic at that point though or telling people to eat so nany of them until they become fat.

FatCatThinCat · 13/02/2021 12:03

It was a meme designed to make the poster feel superior by mocking someone else's weakness. That's a shitty thing to do whatever the subject.

Beyondfedupnow · 13/02/2021 12:04

@Melange99 yes I was talking about Anthea Turner, Ok or Hello magazine did a long interview with her years ago when she was married to Grant Bovey. She banged on about how she keeps in shape and doesn’t understand why women (yes just women) were overweight. I remember it vividly because I was reading it days after giving birth and feeling like a blimp.

Tinacollada · 13/02/2021 12:05

Like all fat people have access to the beach or countryside for a brisk walk.

In National lockdown.

And very people with anorexia have MH issues ?!

I've heard it all now

Tinacollada · 13/02/2021 12:07
  • anorexia or disordered eating, was meant to say.

It's not healthy to be massively under OR overweight.

HTH

Not two slices of toast! More like half the loaf . I used to eat three times the portions at every sitting. I think the McDonald’s etc pictures are just representative of unhealthy eating - whether than be high fat, high sugar or too much of one thing - carbs whatever . It’s just eating badly however you put it
GetOffYourHighHorse · 13/02/2021 12:07

'Fat shaming / lifestyle choice shaming isn't helpful,'

Perhaps you want to stop all health advice? No smoking cessation campaigns as that shames the smokers and they may be depressed or whatever, no alcohol advice just let people drink what they like as that would embarass the heavy drinkers and alcoholics.

If you're overweight not one person is mocking you or suggesting it is easy to lose weight but youve got to stop the excuses. There's this weird narrative that any criticism is 'fat shaming' 🙄.
