Tell me about your favourite cheese....

It’s cold and dark outside and the world is a bit sad. But we still have cheese. Fellow- travellers, tell me about your all-time favourites.

For me, the Alps have the best cheeses. From the fresh little, ashy, goaty crottins to a hearty Abondance. I love Beaufort, even with dodgy Swiss wine. Can take or leave Reblochon, and object to the way it can make a whole chalet smell of itself. Adore Raclette with pommes sapeurs.

Closer to home, you can’t beat Cashel Blue or soft, sheepy Wigmore. And when I make it to the cheese stall at the market, an aged, crumbly Gouda with so much umami it makes my ears tickle.

Cheer me up, share your cheese!

Mrs Kirkham's Creamy Lancashire. It's the finest Lancashire cheese I have tasted. It is creamy and delicious.

Ostryga · 12/02/2021 07:03

We have some fab Norfolk cheeses - White Lady, Copys Cloud, Norfolk Dapple & Bingham Blue are regularly in my fridge.

Copys Cloud bakes so much better than a Camembert.

Ostryga · 12/02/2021 07:03

*Binham Blue - bloody autocorrect!

My wedding cake was five massive wheels of cheese and I was eating it for weeks after. Find me a cheese a don't like. All cheese is a gift from heaven. Cheese is life.

I can't get enough of Brie at the minute! DH haaaaates it so it's all mine Smile

Yep. I was just thinking in answer to the OP, "anything, everything" Grin I'm not in the UK so right now, I'd sell a child for a lump of mature cheddar, the sort that bites you back as my Nan used to say.

I've also got a migraine so a lump of Roquefort would hit the spot.

I can feel a Pong order coming on. (Almost the only cheesemongers who recognise my expat needs Grin)

Cornish Yarg!

BoogleMcGroogle · 12/02/2021 07:11

Ostryga Norfolk indeed makes some great cheese. North Norfolk is home for me (although I now live in Essex) and we had Binham blue on our wedding cheeseboard. DH favours Suffolk Gold, with cider.

Ooh, I really fancy a sharp, crumbly Lancashire now it’s virtues have been extolled. We had some at Christmas and it was lovely. Might pick some up for the weekend 🙂

Do you work for the cheese marketing board OP? Grin

BikeRunSki · 12/02/2021 07:17

Oh gosh, that description of a good Gouda was amazing.

We have a couple of local cheese - Ole Farmer - which is made about a mile away. Quite mild, Edam texture, Wensleydale taste. I am using this a gateway cheese to wean my dc off Cheddar and Edam.

We also have local Brie from a different farm about 3 miles away - Barncliffe Brie - which is nice baked.

I absolutely love Blacksticks Blue. Tangy blue veins in creamy hard red. It’s perfect with oatcakes.

Cheese is the reason I am not vegan, or a Size 12 any more!

StillMedusa · 12/02/2021 07:17

Drunken Monk by the Great British Cheese Company. Comes in truckles and I have to only buy it at Xmas or I'd be as wide as I'm long... indescribably good!

WhipperSnapperSteve · 12/02/2021 07:20

Love Raclette du Valais from the Swiss Alps, peppery and moorish. Manchego from Spain. From home there's Wensleydale, Cheddar and Cheshire. Also Mexicana although it makes me sweat, worth it though!

addler · 12/02/2021 07:31

Mossfield. I tried it once when I used to live near Paxton & Whitfields and it was DELICIOUS. Creamy, strong, salt crystals. Wonderful.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/02/2021 07:47

Ooh, I can't chose! If I want a gooey cheese, it's got to be an Epoisses. For cheddar, black bomber is the bomb. You can't beat a traditional blue Stilton for blue. And I'm not too bothered by Brie but a truffled Brie is a thing of delight. Oooh!! And crumbly, creamy feta with sharp olives! Or hot, chewy halloumi...

Don't make me choose!!!

I love cheese. We are blessed where I live to have several purveyors of fine cheese.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 12/02/2021 07:48

I am living in cheese heaven on the border between France and Switzerland. We get the best of both worlds.

Mont d’Or baked in the oven and eaten with a steak sliced and used to dip. Raclette too but with black pepper or wild garlic in.

Harder Swiss cheeses like Gruyere are nice but my favourite are Italian hard cheeses like Pecorino Romano, Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Sardo, and Grana Padano.

However I’d sell my granny for Halloumi fried in butter until it’s crispy.

BoogleMcGroogle · 12/02/2021 08:29

LongPause you are indeed in cheese heaven. FIL lived in the Haute Savoie and we’ve kept his chalet on ( for now). While the rest of the family can’t wait to get their skis/ walking boots on and head up the mountain, I’m straight into the village cheese shop where I go a bit crazy.

"Mont d’Or baked in the oven and eaten with a steak sliced and used to dip."

Why has it never occurred to me to do this?! This is a genius idea! I'm low carb and thought dipping cheese was lost to me without bread to dip in it.

I am trying this THIS WEEKEND.

Sheleg · 12/02/2021 09:02

I'm one for the Greek and Middle Eastern cheeses (Israeli DH with Greek roots!)

I could eat halloumi and feta until the cows come home.

Clawdy · 12/02/2021 09:59

Davidstow cheddar
Belton Farm Vintage Red Fox - absolutely delicious, and the CoOp has started stocking it!

BoogleMcGroogle · 12/02/2021 10:03

Sheleg shouldn’t that be ‘until the sheep come home?’

Over Xmas, we had a baked vacherin with roasted red grapes, roast red potatoes and sorrel. Divine.
