Tell me about your favourite cheese....

It’s cold and dark outside and the world is a bit sad. But we still have cheese. Fellow- travellers, tell me about your all-time favourites.

For me, the Alps have the best cheeses. From the fresh little, ashy, goaty crottins to a hearty Abondance. I love Beaufort, even with dodgy Swiss wine. Can take or leave Reblochon, and object to the way it can make a whole chalet smell of itself. Adore Raclette with pommes sapeurs.

Closer to home, you can’t beat Cashel Blue or soft, sheepy Wigmore. And when I make it to the cheese stall at the market, an aged, crumbly Gouda with so much umami it makes my ears tickle.

Cheer me up, share your cheese!

Wooky Hole Mature Cheddar. Outrageously delicious.

@MeanMrMustardSeed

Cornish Yarg!
We actually visited the Lynher Dairies where they make it, when we were camping in Cornwall years ago.
huggzy · 12/02/2021 11:35

I love halloumi- and chilli halloumi is delicious!

Can't beat a good strong tangy cheddar.

Applewood smoked or Bavarian smoked.

Somerset Brie especially if it's melted.

Aaargh so many. Jarlsberg, Gruyere, Camembert...

But if I had to pick just one, it would be halloumi saganaki, a Greek meze.

You dip thick slices of halloumi in egg and then semolina, then fry in olive oil until crispy. Meanwhile warm some honey in a pan then pour that over the crispy halloumi and sprinkle oregano, black pepper and black sesame seeds on top.

It's so easy and to die for.

buckeejit · 12/02/2021 22:40

Leeds blue

I'd like to eat any cheese in large quantities right now but I'm dieting & cheese is one of the reasons I need to!

Sparklingbrook · 12/02/2021 22:42

Black Bomber Cheddar-strong but doesn't make your teeth hurt.

buckeejit · 12/02/2021 22:43

Black bomber is a lovely cheese but the red storm, also by Snowdonia is fabulous. Yum!

Firebird83 · 12/02/2021 22:50

Godminster cheddar

Davros · 12/02/2021 23:05

For treat cheese we stick to British, as we're in England an' all. Montgomery cheddar, Lincolnshire Poacher, Tunworth, Colstin Basset Stilton, Bingham Blue. Must have digestives, cream crackers, grapes, pickle. Otherwise of course we eat mozzarella, halloumi, feta etc

sadpapercourtesan · 12/02/2021 23:06

Vignotte

BobsDouble · 12/02/2021 23:10

Comte or Stilton, depending on my mood.

Vinotinto78 · 12/02/2021 23:10

During lockdown we inadvertently (cos they were recently vegan) took delivery of a Welsh cheese hamper. All I’m saying is Perl Las is food of the gods.

BrieAndChilli · 12/02/2021 23:17

My absolutely favourite cheese is y Fenni which is from Abergavenny- it’s a cheese with whole mustard seeds in. I just eat chunks of it on its own.

sherrystrull · 12/02/2021 23:21

Castello

MagentaGreen · 12/02/2021 23:22

Oh and burrato, manchego and some type of Bavarian smoked cheese that I can't remember the name of.

udnertheradar · 12/02/2021 23:35

Truffle Godminster. Mmmmmmm

GiantKitten · 12/02/2021 23:42

Discovered Brillat-Savarin at Christmas, thanks to the Dorset Meat Company (who also do wonderful meat!)
It's a creamy squidgy pot of gorgeousness.
Unfortunately other people thought so too and I didn't get much of it Sad
Hoping for an opportunity soon to stock up on meat & cheese again if lockdown eases. Might need to buy a private fridge too.

Normandy144 · 12/02/2021 23:55

Barkham Blue! Made in Berkshire and absolutely delicious. It was one of the tiers on our wedding cheese stack.

PickAChew · 12/02/2021 23:58

Used to love a good strong cheddar. Menopause induced migraine ended that. Through the change in days now but not sure I can be back to normal diet wise, yet.

mootymoo · 13/02/2021 00:01

You can't beat good Stilton! But I have a rather nice Dorset blue I picked up earlier today from the farm shop stinking the fridge out, (dp isn't a fan)

Kittytheteapot · 13/02/2021 00:01

Stilton for blue cheese.

Anything goaty. The stronger the better.

WhenPushComesToShove · 13/02/2021 00:03

Glastonbury twanger will most certainly pickle your walnuts! Nectar from the Gods...

mootymoo · 13/02/2021 00:03

What's that really gooey French cheese called, stronger than Camembert, loved it but can't remember the name to ask in the shop here?

MagentaGreen · 13/02/2021 03:22

Now I just keeping of more. Chaumes, Reblochon, Comté...

BoogleMcGroogle · 13/02/2021 07:31

Ooh, someone mentioned Y Fenni. My mum used to buy that and it’s gorgeous. Sharp and creamy.
