As in, you don't have to stand over them watching them wash or help them.

Mine are 7 & 9, they're not brilliant at it, but they can do it.

AntiHop · 11/02/2021 23:04

My 6 year old is nowhere near being independent. The shower head is too high up. I've tried handing it to her but she finds it hard to manage holding that shower head and washing herself at the same time.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/02/2021 23:07

Still working on it with my 10yo but he has dyspraxia and ASD. We'd reached the stage of using the disabled facilities at swimming because he needed support that was getting awkward for his age.

My 7 yo copes a bit better and just needs reminders.

cerealcrunch · 11/02/2021 23:23

My 6 year old does everything bar wash her hair - she could give it a good go but she has long thick hair so I like to make sure all the shampoo is out. She has preferred to do the body wash for quite a while now.

RedGoldAndGreene · 11/02/2021 23:28

Long haired dd (until 9/10?) needed confirmation that all shampoo was rinsed.

Ds (6/7) Before that he'd avoid shampooing fringe so he didn't have to get his face wet

Dogsaresomucheasier · 11/02/2021 23:29

My girls needed help to properly wash long hair up to about age 10, but basic hygiene was reliably sorted at 7-8.

My son is 7 and loathes the shower. If I run him a bath he will independently wash himself and needs me to do his hair. I suspect a lot of it is enjoying being babied. As I work full time at it’s daddy for everything else and it’s part of his bedtime with mummy. I don’t think either of us want to give it up yet.

TheGriffle · 11/02/2021 23:32

My 7 year old can do the shower by herself now. Might need to shout up to wash her hair or dont forget under her arms but then she can do those independently after the reminder.

Karen138 · 11/02/2021 23:47

12 months

fallfallfall · 12/02/2021 00:20

by school age so 5. but were good in the tub for hours at a time prior to showering independently.

flatpack1 · 12/02/2021 00:57

9 and still gets sent back occasionly to rinse off conditioner

DinosApple · 12/02/2021 07:20

DC1 has got on with it for a couple of years - she's 11.

The first few times I left her to it she just washed her hair using conditioner - smelt lovely, didn't look so good! Grin

DC2 only likes a bath and has got on with that independently since she was 7 or 8.
Both have long hair- which I still dry.

Getting showered with short hair is a doddle.

Crunchymum · 12/02/2021 07:49

My 8yo has water issues and cannot stand to get his face wet (so much so he was kicked out of his swimming lessons! Shock) so he still need help and will bath rather than shower if he can.

6yo will be alright soon enough, its just if I trust her Grin

3yo is disabled so will most likely always need support.
