Baby sleeping excessively?

My baby just turned 12 weeks and seems to be sleeping quite excessively. He came at 37+5 with no known health issues.

He likes to sleep on me during the day. Often for 4-5 hours in the morning/early afternoon (he wakes occasionally for feeds and then straight back to sleep.) He will then wake for a few hours max before more naps and on/off awake time during the afternoon and evening. He wakes frequently at night and feeds back to sleep. Over a 24 hour period he's probably asleep for approx 17 hours. This seems like so much compared to my first baby.

When he is wake is he alert, smiley, interactive and happy. He always wakes for feeds and doesn't need to be woken up. He's not remotely lethargic and has normal nappies etc.

I'm worried this isn't typical and that he's missing out on lots of day time interaction time. He seems on track with his milestones although not as far ahead as my first son (born at 42 weeks) was at this stage.

Thanks :)

Lap it up sounds fine to me, you are more relaxed 2nd time around he will feel this. We are all relaxed on Lockdown, no choice (apologies to parents up to their eyeballs in wfh/home-schooling).It is cold depths of Winter....he is very young.....enjoying his sleep....

Sounds exactly like my 37 weeker, she was tiny and slept all the time and I remember being worried. She is 5 months now and naps a normal amount for her age. She is behind where my 42 weekers were at this age, but she does seem to be developing at her own pace.

Thanks both! I guess they are all different. Just feel like there is no time outside of feeding etc to play for any long periods of time. My first only slept about 9/10 hours per 24 so this feels so alien.

My third was a bit like this but much earlier. I remember seeing thr health visitor at about the two week mark and saying Ibwas worried as he was literally asleep at least 23/24 hours a day. And I would have to wake him to feed etc. Almost ten years on he's fine. But I would definitely mention it, what was normal for my child may not be for others.

The NHS says a new born should sleep for between 16 to 18 hours a day. You don’t need to change anything but I would try and put your baby down to sleep during the day or disturb them so they feed more during the day in the -vain- hope they sleep more during the night.
